Will come and update

But would you take baby to a&e if this mottled

Cold hands and feet
House is 23 degrees

She has a runny nose and is teething

Thanks

GP would only direct to a&e anyway

They are local to my house but very over used and wondering if I am just wasting their time

She is usually a bit mottled
But not like this

Only when she is sick does she do that

@Cakeyface123

We are going to pop to the chemist, that sounds so frightening

I don't think she has sepsis as no fast heart rate no slow or fast breathing no obvious sign of infection somewhere

I'll come back and post here although I think her circulation is poor.
I have awful circulation and so does my mum. I'm constantly cold and shivering even when nobody else is!

When my son was admitted they did show concern about mottled skin BUT he had quite a few other symptoms too, a fever but cold hands and feet, bluish tint to his lips and sucking in. I don't think mottled skin by itself is necessarily a cause for concern but I'd keep an eye on her for any other symptoms.

CheeseandGherkins · 09/01/2023 09:01

This would concern me and I'm not a first time mum. I would go to a&e if gp couldn't see asap (ie next hour or so). Not worth the risk imo. Hope they are ok

riotlady · 09/01/2023 09:01

I think if she doesn’t have a temp and usually gets mottled skin when she’s unwell then it really does just sound like cold/teething and doesn’t need A and E. I would stick to cuddles, milk and calpol unless anything else changes but you could try a GP appointment if you’re still worrying.

My DD bless her was a really mottled baby, every time we saw a doctor for another reason they would ask about it but it was normal for her

rainbowandglitter · 09/01/2023 09:06

Is she too hot? A house at 23 degrees is stifling.

Yes that's what happened to me and now it's freaked me out

I've also filled out an e consult for her

Just like @Cakeyface123 , when my DD had mottled skin at 1 day old it was because she had sepsis. She didn't have a high temp, but did have an unusually low temp, which is apparently a rarer presentation. So i can understand why everyone might have seemed concerned when you got your last lot of antibiotics. Hopefully your GP can give you some advice.

GinghamWorld · 09/01/2023 09:19

Totally understand OP, my DD had mottled skin before and despite appearing completely healthy doctors kept doing more checks. I think it's a red flag for sepsis so it's drummed into everyone to worry with mottled skin.

Also understand the anxiety, we've had an awful December and it is relentless and makes you question everything. We also have the useless GP who refuses to see any baby and just sends them to A&E for everything. So the options are often go to queue in A&E for 7 hours or do nothing and hope for the best. I absolutely hate that as parents we are left to make that decision ourselves.

I hope your LO is on the mend soon.

GP have text back I was on hold over for hour to get thru to them
I used e consult and got a text back
They will ring me today

Thank you so much for bothering to post this

I really feel comforted by this post and I relate to it, too.

I have had sepsis three times and it really scares me, I don't want to project onto her

I think you are right to take her to the chemist - my son is very fair and would get mottled skin when he was about to develop a temperature because it’s his body sending the blood to the surface to cool it down

Notanormalwinter · 09/01/2023 09:26

Yes I’d get baby seen be it by gp or A&E. Doctors are always cautious when babies are mottled as can be a sign they are unwell. I say this as a former nurse.
Hope all is ok .

ShrinesofGaiety · 09/01/2023 09:32

You sound like a lovely mum, hope you get reassurance soon.

Wishiwasatailor · 09/01/2023 09:34

Off fluid and diarrhoea with mottling? Get her checked by gp. Pharmacy is a waste of time they won’t know what to do with a baby like this.
fluids little and often.

I also relate to everything you said, our GP stopped seeing people face to face during Covid and never reverted back and I just don't get it. As you say, it is just making life so much more stressful.

I saw your update and am so glad they will call you today, so hopefully you have some answers and can take the pressure off yourself trying to guess what's wrong.

Also no wonder you're worried if you've dealt with this 3 times yourself. I hope your day improves soon and your LOs stay illness-free for a while.

Novemberhater · 09/01/2023 09:40

Hopefully your DD is fine. Avoid going to Margate unless you are advised to by your GP. It's the A&E from hell.

WeWereInParis · 09/01/2023 09:41

When I took my DD to a&e at 6 weeks (sent by 111) for a separate issue, she was mottled like that and the triage nurse immediately got the Dr to come and check her. The dr was happy that the mottling wasn't serious. I assumed that it was something that could be a sign of something serious when seen with other symptoms. Both my DDs looked like that semi-regularly as babies.

PrayingandHoping · 09/01/2023 09:41

This has happened to my daughter before when she's been ill (which due to other conditions been she has an open door to a&e).

The rule they told me is that if the mottling disappears in an hour it's nothing to worry about, if it stays then straight to a&e

It was an paed registrar that told me that.

MrsH497 · 09/01/2023 09:50

My now 10 month old gets this with bronchiolitis when she's struggling with her breathing. Dr has always told me to get her checked with mottled skin

LucieLemon · 09/01/2023 09:51

There's no reason to be apologetic about seeking advice or reassurance xx

I'm a mother of 5 and a trained nurse and I still second guess myself! Every baby is so different and what I've done for one isn't necessarily the best course of action for another.

When my little boy (DC4) was around 18 months old he was unwell, looked blue round the lips and temp was around 35.8c I ended up taking him to a&e, as another poster mentioned a very low temperature can be a presentation of sepsis as much as a very high. Thankfully he was fine in the end, all cleared up with oral antibiotics. The hospital gave me the option of having him admitted for observation overnight but I chose to take him home as he was a lot more settled by that point. They never made me feel as though I was overreacting or wasting time.

With your history I can totally understand your concerns, hope she feels better soon x

ThelmaDinkley · 09/01/2023 10:20

I would get your little one checked out if she’s not well in herself, clingy and off her food. Drs never mind with babies. Hope you all feel better soon.

stopbeeping · 09/01/2023 11:07

Hi all just to say the doctor called me just after I last posted and we are going to go see him at 145
If she gets worse then I am to bring her to a&e before then otherwise bring her with me

It's because when I push down on her nails the blood takes a good few seconds to come back
I think it's because she's gotten cold from dribbling and she's just run down low energy from not eating- which is making her cold and mottled but I am not going to take a risk so we will go and see the doctor xx

Natsku · 09/01/2023 11:14

Glad you've got an appointment. Can understand wanting to get her seen when her skin is that mottled but she's not cold (I mean the room is warm enough that she shouldn't be mottled from cold). I remember taking my son to A&E for the same reason when he was a baby, though it turned out to be nothing, my OH said it was better to go and find out it was nothing than stay home and worry.

stopbeeping · 09/01/2023 14:58

Hey everyone I am back
The doctor thinks she might have a uti but isn't worried about the mottling and the fact she is cold. She was hysterical with him today.
So we are going to get a urine sample to them this evening for a dip and they will also send one off for culture

I hope she isn't going to have kidney issues like I do.

The poor sausage
He said she is cold and mottled as under the weather but in itself the mottling is not so worrying it's more how upset she is that is the indicator of something being wrong
Heart sounded good and chest too etc

Thank you all so much for your support I was so worried. Normally the kids just need a a good sleep and a kiss and they feel better, but this time it felt different
