Have been out of work for over a year, was working at the hospital as a ward clerk whilst studying for HR. Found out I was pregnant with my son and didn’t go back after mat leave.

Now I applied for Tesco round the corner part time just to get back me back in to work again and the hours fitted perfectly around the kids school and DH work.

Other job offer 4 hours a day 5 days a week as an HR supervisor. I’ll be out the house 5 days a week 2 hour a day commute in total. £200 a month on fuel and train costs maybe even more.
Lots of training and development opportunities.
im no better of money wise but obviously it’s a foot in the door.

Or just take Tesco spend another year at home with my son and do my level 5 HR.

WWYD?

Take the HR one if that’s what you want to do for your career

dizzydizzydizzy · 08/01/2023 14:21

Take the HR job. It will be better for your future. If that doesn't work out, you'll still be able to get a local Tesco job or similar.

Teenagequeenwithaloadedgun · 08/01/2023 14:23

I'd take the HR role if that's your area of study. Well done on 2 job offers!

NewYearNewCareer · 08/01/2023 14:23

The HR job will have training and pay rises - the Tesco on will be non wage.

I would do the HR and give it a year - see how you feel. Tesco jobs will always be available as they are staffed by students.

NewYearNewCareer · 08/01/2023 14:24

If it’s an hour away you could always work from home in the holidays or put your kids in clubs closer to work -

where there’s a will there’s a way.

SomethingLessIdentifiable · 08/01/2023 14:26

Having done a job with a 2 hour (minimum, if all public transport is running perfectly and on time) commute, I’d never do it again.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 08/01/2023 14:28

I would do the Tesco job and continue my studies. By the time you finish you child will be a bit older assuming you don't have another and there are loads of remote HR jobs you don't need to be commuting. Maybe get a part-time WFH role in the evenings to keep your skills up. Or volunteer at CAB or similar

custardbear · 08/01/2023 14:31

I'd take the HR job, see if you can work from home 1-2 days per week too to save a daily commute. Would they also flex your hours? So say work an extra hour each day and do 4 days

NEmama · 08/01/2023 14:32

H r job and part time study

Shamoo · 08/01/2023 14:33

Do the HR job hours still mean you can do school pick up and drop off? If so I would do that. Sounds perfect to get you back in but with good hours!

Firefly86 · 08/01/2023 14:33

I went back after my second child to a 1hr each way commute. It was a fine job but the travel was awful. More than once i drove all the way there and within the hour get a call from creche to pick them up again.

But. On the other hand it was 2 hours 'peace' where no one wanted anything from me. Despite traffic jams etc, that was often very welcome alone time.

If HR is your career choice then probably best to get right back into it.

Icannever · 08/01/2023 14:49

Tesco job for sure, 2 hours of driving everyday just to work for four hours sounds crazy and an unnecessary amount of stress. Your kids are small and so I would imagine you will naturally have many other stresses in your life so why add an extra stress you don’t need to.

Decisionsdecisons · 08/01/2023 16:13

It’s 2 hours total commute a day, 1 hour there and back. I want to go for it but feel abit sad leaving 9 month old DS I’ll feel lost without him.

NewYearNewCareer · 08/01/2023 16:39

You’d have to leave him for either job. So that’s irrelevant!
You could put him in nursery closer to work. If that helped.

Heyahun · 08/01/2023 16:55

your hr qualification will be fairly useless if you have no experience working in it tbh

id go for the hr job it will be way better in the long run

kasho5 · 08/01/2023 17:33

HR one definitely. Much better in the longer term.

Mosaic123 · 08/01/2023 17:36

HR job seems to be the best.

If it doesn't work out you can get a different job. Give it a try.
