Left it too late with dd?

Posting for traffic.

My dd is nearly 10 months old and because she's always been so small in stature and weight, she's still napping and sleeping in the next to me crib in our room. She is finally starting to outgrow it and while she's not making any attempt to sit up in it etc, I know it'll soon be a safety issue so I'm trying to gradually move her into her cot in her own room.

She hates it though. She's happy enough to sit and play in it but absolutely won't sleep in there. I've tried putting her in there when she's really tired. I've tried just putting her down for naps in there but sleeping in the next to me at night still. She just won't settle at all. I'm wondering if we've left it too late to try and introduce her to it.

It doesn't help that the first time she went in it she got her leg caught in the bars and I think that's maybe left a lasting negative impression. It does worry me that she might do that again and hurt herself. Has anyone got any tips or ideas for an in-between solution? She's always been an amazing sleeper and i don't want to disrupt that but she can't stay in the next to me for much longer.

My dd didn't like her for initially, I used a travel cot by my bed as a transition

Danikm151 · 08/01/2023 10:28

Travel cot?

then transition to bedroom with it then move to the cot

Can u get the next to me in the cot. I put the moses basket in the cot to start with ?

Put her cot or a travel cot in your room so it’s not a change of bed and room.

Can you not wait for her to fall asleep in your arms? Maybe she’s too young to be put down awake.

We used to wait for DS to fall asleep in our arms and then put him down after about 20 mins at that age. He is 2 now and been self soothing himself to sleep
for well over 6 months.

Our DC went from the next to me cot, to a cot in our room and then we moved the cot to their room

My DS was about 9 months when we made the transition. Like you, I couldn't get him to nap in his big cot for love nor money but he weirdly was absolutely fine at night. We just tried one time and it worked immediately.

She's 10 months now and she's always fallen asleep well by herself. I do stand and shush her for a while then gradually leave the room and never had any issues.

I'm not sure if the cot would fit in our room, it's already a squeeze with the next to me. But might have to try it as the change of bed and environment is probably too much in one go.

A travel cot will be smaller and feel more like the next to me so maybe your solution here

10 months is not too young to be put down. Around 6 months old babies should be put down awake and sleep in their own room. It gets harder the older they get to do this otherwise.

And since she's always been so good at going down it's not something I want to introduce at this stage. I just wish she could stay in the next to me! She's always settled so well in it and I like having her close by. She's still waking for a feed at about 4-5am so it's convenient having her next to me too.

I think a travel cot in our room is probably the way to go. I don't want to move the cot in really as it's big and heavy. Plus the bars are worrying me a bit now :/ did anyone's kid go from a travel cot straight to a toddler bed?

We used the cot afterwards but I did use it far later than some do as dd wasn't a climber and it was not a cot bed. We had a normal single waiting rather than a toddler bed so she wasn't ready for it coming out of travel cot . I know people move out of cots far sooner than we did when they have a toddler or cot bed so it would be totally feasible to go straight to toddler bed

NuffSaidSam · 08/01/2023 11:14

Was she in a sleeping bag when she got her leg caught between the bars of the cot?

No she wasn't, that's a very good idea actually. But then she'd probably do it with her arm 🙈
