To eating camembert when it's not baked?

Am I the only one who eats Camembert cold just cut by the slice? I brought a cheese board to a party over the holidays and included a whole Camembert on it alongside some other cheeses, meats and crackers. I was the only one who ate the Camembert as it was. Thinking about it after I do remember someone years ago mentioning they only ate Camembert when it was baked and melty. But I didn't think that was a rule / norm.

AIBU to eat it cold just as is?

YANBU. Camembert at room temperature is delicious.

AnneLovesGilbert · 07/01/2023 22:32

YANBU. It’s perfect as it is.

ofwarren · 07/01/2023 22:32

I eat it cold too

DelurkingAJ · 07/01/2023 22:32

Baked Camembert wasn’t a thing I was aware of until about 10 years ago. I’d always eaten it as it comes before then…and still do so now when I fancy it!

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 07/01/2023 22:33

What a strange question, its a perfectly normal thing to do

Maybe the other people just don't like it.

ShutUpBaggyTits · 07/01/2023 22:33

YANBU

I think the "proper" way to eat it is room temperature or slightly warm so it's a bit gooey inside.

But like you, I eat it straight from the fridge.

Yummy 😋

XenoBitch · 07/01/2023 22:33

I prefer it baked. It tastes like toilets when cold.

Hobbesmanc · 07/01/2023 22:34

Unless it's nice a ripe it just tastes bland and chalky.

WaddleAway · 07/01/2023 22:35

Not cold, but room temperature. I love a really good Camembert on a cheese board.

RicherThanYews · 07/01/2023 22:36

I don't have an issue with cold camembert per se but I tend to buy cold cut meats, pickles, gherkins, salad and a brown oat loaf to go with a baked camembert as a full meal so I don't think a cold one would work.

Reigateforever · 07/01/2023 22:37

The French normally eat it at room temperature on a cheese board (before the dessert). Heated and used as a dip for buffets with other finger food.

WandaWonder · 07/01/2023 22:37

I have never eaten it baked

quokka5 · 07/01/2023 22:38

your cheese, your rules.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 07/01/2023 22:38

The idea of baked Camembert is, I suspect, a way of making rubbish underripe Camembert saleable and edible. It’s a pretty new fad. I do like it but decent Camembert is delicious and like all cheeses should be eaten at room temperature.

TheMousePipes · 07/01/2023 22:39

Camembert (in my opinion) needs to be removed from the fridge three hours before eating and then consumed in a big gluttony cheese fest. Baking is totally unnecessary.

MarmiteCoriander · 07/01/2023 22:44

On a cheese board I'd serve it at room temperature for at least an hour or so- not cold from the fridge, nor baked.

StaunchMomma · 07/01/2023 22:52

I too was the only person who attacked the camembert this Xmas.

I think people are put off by the smell.

It's my absolute fave, even if it does smell like rotting corpses 😂

namechangedtoprotectmyvag · 07/01/2023 22:57

Thanks for the replies. I didn't realise it was actually meant to be served at room temperature. While I often cut a chunk off and eat it straight out of the fridge, it was on the cheese board for hours so would have been room temperature for the party. I was really starting to think I'd raised a few eyebrows there after not baking it.

Before unwrapping the paper you should test, by pressing the centre to see if it has some give, to make sure it is ripe.

CarPoor · 07/01/2023 23:14

Camembert was eaten for generations before it was even considered baked. It is delicious particularly yes at room temperature

mogsrus · 07/01/2023 23:23

No you are not op. I’ll binge on it cold

PyongyangKipperbang · 07/01/2023 23:50

NBU

I love it baked, I do prefer it that way (and with a little bit of cranberry sauce as it takes away the the slight stale "feet" taste you get after the first couple of mouthfuls) but I also like it "raw" so to speak! It does seem that a lot of people think you can only eat it baked though. A surprising number of people asked me if they had to cook it before eating it as it was labelled "baking camembert" when we were selling them at work. IT was only labelled that as it came in a nice dish.....which was worth the price on its own!

Sleepyquest · 08/01/2023 11:38

Which is the best one to buy to eat at room temp and how long until it's ripe?
