When did a trip to the cinema get so expensive?!

DS wanted to take a mate to the cinema for his birthday. So me, him, DD and his mate went for a Burger King before, 1 adult and 3 kids cinema tickets and then popcorn for us. £112 🤯

Aibu to think it just seems RIDICULOUSLY expensive!! I mean it’s only an Odeon cinema!

Its not like I don’t get out much either- we do stuff all the time but the cinema was always a ‘cheap’ option but the tickets were nearly £50 for 1 adult & 3 kids!!

I’ve paid for my DD and a friend to go to the cinema today. I just dropped and collected. £5.95 a ticket at Vue and sweets from the Co-op. You’ve gone as a birthday treat with fast food and cinema popcorn. Entirely possible to do it cheaper.

NotSonicTheHedgehog · 07/01/2023 19:25

As others have said £4.99 for a ticket at Vue. All day everyday. There's a massive Tesco next to the one I use so you can guess where the popcorn etc comes from

Amboseli · 07/01/2023 19:26

We get 2 for 1 vouchers for Odeon with our times subscription. Never buy popcorn, there's a Wilko opposite cinema so we get pic n mix from there.

But never go to the cinema these days.

You just need to see this as a one off and don't make the same mistake twice!

Cococomellon · 07/01/2023 19:30

£50 on tickets so £60 on Burger King and popcorn?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/01/2023 19:32

Took dd to see Matilda recently, I was actually surprised at how cheap it was. Adult + 1 child ticket was £15+ £2.50 each for an ice cream. That was an Odeon.

PeekAtYou · 07/01/2023 19:34

£50 for 4 tickets isn't unreasonable as it's the weekend and you didn't use Meercat movies etc.
Can't believe that you spent £60 on food! I would have brought snacks or gone to McDonalds or similar.
BP2 is on Disney Plus on 1st Feb for anybody else considering it.

tealgate · 07/01/2023 19:37

We get all our Cineworld tickets with Tesco vouchers - feels free then Smile

Mindymomo · 07/01/2023 19:41

Our 2 local cinemas are Everyman, seats at the weekend are £16.50 per adult, but they are comfy sofas. 2 coffees 1 slice of cake £10. It’s a treat now for us, whereas we used to go at least once a month. The food they do is nice, burgers, pizza etc.,

Travis1 · 07/01/2023 19:42

We go most weeks using o2 priority so all it costs us is an ice blast for me and a coffee for
him and we don’t actually need those. We always take snacks with us

Frabbits · 07/01/2023 19:43

You didn't need to more than double the cost by going to BK, getting popcorn etc.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 07/01/2023 19:51

It's really sad that a couple of hours of entertainment costs so much. When I was a kid at my local ABC cinema in town (in the 80s) there were queues around the corner to get in every Saturday afternooon because it was affordable enough to spend pocket money on a trip every couple of weeks there. All seats were £1 at the time that Labyrinth came out, so what, 1986? That's about £2.75 in today's money. Imagine!

It's a vicious circle because the more it costs the less people will go because it's just unaffordable and people may as well stay at home and use streaming services or satellite instead and it works out a lot cheaper. So they put the prices up to make it profitable, and so it goes on.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 07/01/2023 19:56

I'd always go to the cinema if it was as cheap as £2.75. Films are better on the big screen and it feels more of an event. But I weigh it up and think is it worth paying over £10 per adult and well, it just isn't, is it? It's about value and worth.

lovelilies · 07/01/2023 23:03

I paid£8 for a ticket to watch the Whitney movie tonight. Brought my own drink and popcorn 🍿

Went today 6.80 per person very good value .

LadyOfTheFliessssss · 07/01/2023 23:11

I always go to independent cinemas. My friend and I see a film a month for £11 for the pair of us.

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 07/01/2023 23:12

£4.99 per person here (Vue) and we get food from Poundstretcher before going in - costs about £15 total for two adults.

Thefriendlyone · 07/01/2023 23:12

There is no way this is accurate, 3 kids and 1 adult ticket no way costs 112 quid, I’d eat my hat if more than 40 or 50.

so you spent a fuck ton on food. What’s that got to do with it?

Knobknob · 07/01/2023 23:16

Just had a look at how much one adult and three kids would be at a London cinema near me -£38

elliejjtiny · 07/01/2023 23:17

I remember when it was £3.20 for a student cinema ticket and then you bought sweets and a panda pop in Woolworths before you went in.

MaverickGooseGoose · 07/01/2023 23:18

So you're counting the BK in the 'cinema' cost? It's nothing to do with it. I don't know anyone who buys Pickens in the cinema either.

mogsrus · 07/01/2023 23:18

Cinemas have increased in price over the yrs as has everything else, this yr I honestly think they will definitely struggle as the power bills start to roll in & they do chew a lot of power

123woop · 07/01/2023 23:18

I don't know any families who go to the cinema these days. All instead have bought reasonably good tvs and sound systems and have "movie nights" at home with the kids when a film comes out on Netflix or sky etc.
It's also a bad experience mostly unless you're going imax - I went to one a few years ago and it was filthy, smelled bad, really cramped and people talking all the way through etc. like being on a very dark plane ride 🤣🤣

Annoyingwurringnoise · 07/01/2023 23:19

I clicked the wrong option, you are definitely not being unreasonable, the prices are outrageous.

Carolservicedeprived · 07/01/2023 23:20

We went to our little local cinema tonight. Tickets were £3.50 plus 75p booking fee for booking online. Maybe there is a cheaper option near you too.
