Sweet school snack ideas

Dd, is starting school full time next week, she has lunches there, but I need to provide an afternoon snack. She’s not too keen about going full time, what nice things could I put in her snack box to make the settling in easier?
I think they’re allowed chocolate, crisps etc in moderation, I’m thinking a little choc treat with obviously other healthy bits

Do the school suggest anything? At our preschool morning snack had to be fruit or vegetables, and lunchboxes could include some treat type stuff- I’d make a little cake or something. They didn’t have afternoon snack though.

fajitaaaa · 07/01/2023 16:03

Veggie stars

TinySaltLick · 07/01/2023 16:04

Why jump straight to chocolate? It doesn't need to be a dessert to convince your child that the afternoon is fun - it should be something nutritious which offers energy not just a sugar hit which will be difficult to come back from

A flapjack or Cereal bar would be much more sensible

I would honestly be a bit surprised if the school allowed parents to give chocolate as a snack

MilkyYay · 07/01/2023 16:05

Dont make a habit now. Fruit is sweet, i doubt school will allow chocolate or any other "treat".

Miala · 07/01/2023 16:08

Popcorn always seems to go down as a treat and isn't too unhealthy. Malt loaf. Fig rolls.

bellac11 · 07/01/2023 16:09

Banana chips
Raisins
Nuts and fruit
Bits of coconut
Fruit
Tomatoes
Chopped carrot batons

But as others have said, why the need for 'sweet' rather than just a mixture of foods.

Oneofthosenothingdays · 07/01/2023 16:10

They are allowed, we’re not in U.K., very healthy country but one that understands balance is ok
Any different ideas? Fruit is obviously going in there and some cheese/mini yoghurt

How much does she need for goodness sake?!!

Oneofthosenothingdays · 07/01/2023 16:11

@bellac11 ? If I put for example, a small tangerine, a babybel or mini yoghurt, I’d like to add one more thing that is a bit nicer to it

Flapjacks are sugary too

All of those things are nice! I wonder if you are projecting your own food prejudice on her? Do you see those items only as functional food and that they are missing a sugary treat to make them complete?

If so I think you need go look at adjusting your own perception, not your child's lunchbox

Oneofthosenothingdays · 07/01/2023 16:13

I’m not jumping straight to sweet 🙈I’m going for fruit, veg, cheese etc, just as a small extra treat…that’s all 🙄

Oneofthosenothingdays · 07/01/2023 16:16

@TinySaltLick No…it’s just her first week and she doesn’t really want to stay, I just wanted to include something small to make her smile..and yes, something *small and sweet would likely do that more than a carrot stick or cucumber stick (she will and does have these also) We have a healthy attitude to food, which includes a balance in my view 🤷🏻‍♀️

Two points here - 1) it was a suggestion against the 'sweet' request in the op which would be a big improvement versus chocolate, 2) they aren't necessarily sugary - they can be made with oats/milk/fruit alone, yes some shop bought ones have added sugar but that isn't always the case) and actually nowadays I'd say the sugary ones are the exception not the norm)

mumonthehill · 07/01/2023 16:18

mini banana muffins are good and easy to freeze snd then pop in lunch box. But if you want a treat then a small chocolate biscuit would be fine.

1hyuny · 07/01/2023 16:19

Why does she need so much as an afternoon snack? What times is she there from and til? Seems a lot. Anyway I'd make my own flapjacks - oats, mashed banana, nut butter (if allowed) and a squirt of honey - you could throw some more nuts and choc chips in there. Mix together and bake for 15 mins. Then cool and cut into squares.

FranklyBoyle · 07/01/2023 16:25

I am in the UK and put popcorn, a small biscuit like a custard cream and that is it! One or the other. And sometimes a pot of jelly.

Oneofthosenothingdays · 07/01/2023 16:25

She probably doesn’t need that much, I’m likely overthinking it..just wanted to include something nice to show I was thinking of her…perhaps I’ll put a little heart or picture in

FranklyBoyle · 07/01/2023 16:26

Oh but that is lunch - we don’t provide a snack thank
god. I suppose something easy to eat and not too messy.

I'm sure she'd love a heart or a picture! I work in a school and one child in my class had a little note from his mum or big sister everyday - whoever had made his lunch. He proudly showed it around the classroom everyday, and now five or six of them get notes from home in their lunch!

PennyRa · 07/01/2023 16:31

I used to make cakes, flapjacks, biscuits, etc filled with love with cute little designs and patterns

That’s not a snack for a small child, it’s almost a full meal!!! Just one of those items would be a snack.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 07/01/2023 16:35

When DD started fulltime school we did a few things because she was having some episodes of crying at drop off.

1- funny notes in her lunch box with cartoony pictures
2 - I made her a little felt heart badge and we 'loaded' it with kisses and hugs in the morning so if she was missing us she could touch it and get a mummy/daddy hug
3 - we made a game of what fun things happened before lunch and what fun things happened after lunch. I would guess and she'd tell me if I was right or wrong and fill in with the right answers. So I'd say 'before lunch you had a ride on a giraffe' or 'after lunch you did 3000 cartwheels in the headteachers office' always ridiculous infeasible things that would make her giggle.

In terms of snacks, how about a little tupperware tub of tinned peach slices or mandarin segments, they're a healthy choice but sweet and sticky.

Some favourite things kids have enjoyed in my experience have been silly post it notes from parents. One mum would write (scratch) the child’s name or a smiley face on a banana which then showed brown on the skin. Cute and he loved it but my dd would probably have turned her nose up!
We did a sweet treat on a Friday for our dd and every other day was the usual fruit, yogurt, cheese.
I think you are overthinking it. They never really want to stay and those who do quickly realise it’s forever and normally hit that stage later. We bought dd a pocket hug off Etsy. It’s a plastic figure which she had in her pocket and could squeeze in her hand if she missed us. We gave both gave it a kiss before she went to school 😂
