House Keys

AIBU to feel annoyed that our daughter has lost her keys to our house but decided not to tell us?

I don't know who might have them and now feel vulnerable.

Should I get the locks changed?

DS has lost two of ours. It’s infuriating.

Are there identifying keyrings on it? If not then it’s just a random key and the chance of anyone being able to use it are tiny.

KrisAkabusi · 07/01/2023 15:59

I wouldn't. Unless your address is attached, who's going to know where the keys are for?

If it makes you feel better then do it

I suppose my mind is working overtime, but just wondered if someone from college could have taken them out of her bag? In which case they may be able to work out where we live.

My sister has been broken into previously and the thought of a stranger having keys to my house has wobbled me a bit!

It's a bit frustrating, but these things happen.

As others have said, anyone finding them is vanishingly unlikely to be able to identify which house they are for.

Jarstastic · 07/01/2023 16:12

I’d do it.

You can just have the barrels changed which is a bit cheaper.

caramac04 · 07/01/2023 16:21

Maybe think about getting a key safe so dd doesn’t need to take keys to school.

Ginandtoner · 07/01/2023 16:23

I would change the locks

CantHaveTooMuchChocolate · 07/01/2023 16:34

Change the barrels of the main locks (can be a diy job), then get your daughter one of those trackers for her key fob (e.g. tile)

Definitely YANBU to that. Losing the keys is careless, not telling you is irresponsible. If it was us I think we'd get the lock changed.

YellowLemonshade · 07/01/2023 19:42

I got sooo fed up with lost keys.
Changed the locks and installed a key box, and only me and DD have a house key. Everyone else uses the box.

Helenloveslee4eva · 07/01/2023 19:47

Change the barrel in your main lock ( it’s easy ) and don’t worry about it.

Box containing a key? A colleague did this, her ds then lost that key too.

YellowLemonshade · 07/01/2023 20:23

Oh, cherrysoup that's frustrating!
In our case it's open the key box, take out the key, open the door, put the key straight back in the box.
Has worked so far

babypleasenow · 07/01/2023 20:29

I think changing the locks is a bit unnecessary. These things happen and it's not done on purpose. I don't think people are going to be trying locks with keys they might find! If someone wants to break into a house they will not be using this method. Don't worry about it.

NumberTheory · 07/01/2023 21:20

If she doesn’t know how she lost it and she lives at home then changing the locks would be on the very cautious side of sensible.

But I wouldn’t bother unless you have reason to think your house would be targeted in some way (DD has a stalker/you’re famous/very rich/etc.)

jetadore · 07/01/2023 21:29

Are those key box/safe things really secure? The ones with a combination? I’m feel dedicated thieves would know a way to open them?

TinySaltLick · 07/01/2023 21:35

I certainly couldn't bother, noone who would realistically break into your house is going to use the keys

The liklihood of someone finding the keys, working out which house it is, and then deciding to burgle it is pretty much zero

ShrillBill · 07/01/2023 22:21

If you want to know the actual risk, ask your house insurers what their advice would be.
I would change one lock on each door. Its pretty easy to do most of them yourself, there are YouTube vids that show you how to do it.

areyoustillhere · 07/01/2023 22:29

My DS18 lost his two weeks ago too. Not in any of the three places that were most obvious, and I've been wondering what to do as had quite a distinct keyring. Not been an issue until now as I've been on holiday, so always been one of us home, but I start back on Monday.

I think I'm going to get the barrel changed. But he'll be paying for it, and for new keys. It's not the first time he's lost them, but we've moved since.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 07/01/2023 22:35

I got locked out a while ago and it took the locksmith less than a minute to get my door open. Anyone who is determined to burgle you doesn't need keys. Change locks if it makes you feel better and tell your DD to let you know if she loses another set.

2chocolateoranges · 08/01/2023 00:45

It’s so frustrating but the chance of someone finding the keys and finding the correct house is almost nil.

However when both our young adults, 19 and 21 , go out for a night out I always ask them not to take their keys and to text when they are 10 minutes from home and I’ll open the door!

hate the hassle of having to get new keys cut.
