MLM and conspiracy theories about cars

MojoMoon · 07/01/2023 13:08

I have a relative who has been into various MLM schemes over the last 15 years - she is in her 40s, 7 years old than me.

Since childhood, she's always been a bit gullible - and very emotional. There was a holiday where she cried for an entire day because we found a dead baby bird that bad fallen out of a nest on the floor - she'd have been 12 at the time. Always struggled a bit with friends because she was quite gullible, easily led - people took advantage of that in her teens. She meant well but the combination of gullibility and quite showy emotional moments meant she probably tired people out quite quickly. She is the sort to post everything on social media even from its earliest days in a "OMG, can't believe some people are so rude" and hope people reply to ask "what's going on?"

She wasn't hugely academic but muddled through school ok, then went into various office admin type jobs.

Met someone, first proper boyfriend, had a kid, split up fairly quickly.

I lose track of all the MLMs but it's all the sort of herbal/health/cleanse ones.
I decided not to buy anything quite early on as it's a scam but she was very invested in them all so it falls on deaf ears. I just politely decline now and don't say why.

For her, I am sure a big part of it was the sense of belonging these MLM schemes foster. For someone who has always struggled with friends a bit, having loads of people (also MLMers) like your social media posts, comment on them is probably really gratifying so I have tried not to be too negative about it and have just avoided it as much as possible. She went on a trip to Mallorca for a MLM awards event with some of them once and posted a million photos and still talks about it now, years later.

Anyway, that's the backstory. I've usually just ignored it.

But in the last few months, she has really got into conspiracy theories. There was a bit of it during COVID (deliberately released by China, the UN knows all about it etc) but she did get vaxxed.

But she seems to have tipped fully into the new world order conspiracy that The Great Reset is coming through the medium of some restrictions on cars.

There is a low traffic neighbourhood in Oxford somewhere - a city she has never been to, neither have I - and some plan to encourage 15 min city idea in Oxford which is the idea that planning departments should encourage developments that means people able to buy their food, see a GP, go to school, visit a dentist, usual regular life tasks within a 15 min travel distance.

Apparently this is just the start of the new world order and the Great Reset and we'll soon have to get permission to leave the house.

She has made some "friends" online who are ardently pushing this idea, and spends a lot of time in private WhatsApp groups talking with them although a couple of these accounts look dubious to me and maybe sockpuppets -
Some are real people (from her MLM networks) but some are definitely not.

She is now bombarding the wider family with stuff on this. Xmas was full of it. She is filling a family whats app group with it despite being asked by other people to stop.

What do we do? I feel like trying to discuss the topic is unlikely to succeed as she isn't going to listen to facts or look at evidence.

I get that she is probably quite lonely and this gives her some status so I am trying not to be too harsh on her but it's quite trying.

She lives in NE, opposite end of country to me so my physical contact is limited to a couple of times a year at family events. But she is really alienating the family now.

Maybe we should have done something earlier with the MLM stuff but it was relatively low key compared to his. How do we pull her out of this rabbit hole?

I will suggest to the rest of cousins that we all mute the family whatsapp group for a few weeks and leave her to post into the void.

Maybe she'll get the message if there is no response at all. I'll keep an eye out on the group in case she posts something normal, like a pic of her kid, and then respond to that and encourage them to do the same so she gets attention for the good stuff

Ignore the bad behaviour, reward the good...

Oh and call me the illuminati but being able to have a school, GP, shop etc within 15 minutes of new housing developments sounds like a great idea. It’s just convenience for everyday matters.

Unfortunately that’s not what Oxford CC are doing. They are trying to stop their citizens going outside their little district without providing any facilities within it. And it’s not new developments, it’s established areas where most of the shops, schools etc have closed.

Yes I have a relative that is into this too. She says we all need to wake up because there is a worldwide communist plot underway. If you own a house it's going to be taken off you. If you a rent a house then you will be able to live there indefinitely and not pay any rent.
He's bought up other currencies from around the world because after the reset the currencies will all change which will make him a millionaire overnight.

For all the previous posters saying that they believe this, can you please explain why you believe this nonsense ?

If the Great Reset is promising us all a nicer family, then it's going to be wildly popular with most AIBU posters!

Is it so horrible to worry about her being taken advantage of?

I know someone who is convinced we will be like China with their social credit system in the next 10 years.

I explained that you'd need an awful lot of cameras for tracking the whereabouts of every individual citizen in the U.K.

They do seem to think our Goverment will comply and that most of the prominent world leaders and governments are in the pockets of the WEF.

Please explain how Oxfordshire CC are trying to stop the residents of Oxford from leaving their very well connected city?

GrannyWeatherwaxsHatpin · 07/01/2023 15:18

For those saying the Great Reset is not a conspiracy issue - well, yes and no.

It’s true that the WEF came up with a plan to shape the post-covid world into a better place which they termed “the Great Reset” but it has also been hijacked by conspiracy theorists: www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-trending-57532368

I very much suspect that OP’s relation (along with my friend) is on the “conspiracy theory nut job” side of this rather than being engaged with the World Economic Forum’s political and economic discussions.

Flapjackquack · 07/01/2023 15:19

Sorry I mean Oxford CC, but still, there is no conspiracy to confine the people of Oxford.

ijustwantasofa · 07/01/2023 15:23

The thing is, you don't need a huge conspiracy to explain the rich getting richer off the backs of the poor and making life worse for everyone for the gain of people in power.

It's right in front of us, no-one is really attempting to hide it. Twas ever thus.

If only the same effort was put into holding government to account and making it even vaguely desirable to do the things you promise.

Cassillero · 07/01/2023 13:37

Yeah I think she's right too.

Town Planning - those nefarious bastards - have a lot to answer for, what with their evil schemes to make towns pedestrian friendly & facilities quickly accessible on foot.

OBVIOUSLY it's only a small step from being able to walk to Wilco's to having the entire nation put under house arrest. Hmm

astronewt · 07/01/2023 15:39

You can't reason people out of positions they didn't reason themselves into.

Conspiracy theories provide an ego boost and a feeling of connection for people who are not very bright and not good at forging social connections. For the moment, your cousin is annoying but harmless, and seems unlikely to escalate into harming herself or others any time soon. There is very little you can do other than limit your exposure to her and don't feed the conspiracy by trying to argue her out of it. I would, tbh, quietly set up an additional WhatsApp group containing everyone but her and have actual family chat there, while muting the other.

Blueblell · 07/01/2023 15:43

Set up a separate WhatsApp group that is only for conspiracy theories. Maybe you could all contribute some outlandish ones and she might see that she is being daft. On a serious note she may be struggling with life a bit and needs something to divert her attention to - some other more healthy pastimes/hobbies

TrickorTreacle · 07/01/2023 15:53

The best thing to do is to shadow-ban her.

The way shadow-banning works is that she is still part of the group and can still make posts, but no one else can see her posts. The idea is that she'll eventually get bored of posting in her echo chamber because no one is responding to her.

Shadow-banning is also quite common on forums, YouTube and some online games that have chat.

Herejustforthisone · 07/01/2023 16:25

Some people have minds as weak as kittens. Yikes.

Helen901 · 07/01/2023 17:36

Set up a new family whatsapp group and dont add her. Mute the original one so you dont get the updates 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️

MojoMoon · 07/01/2023 14:30

I've always felt a bit sorry for her - as kids, we spent quite of bit of time on family holidays together despite the 7 year as my other cousins close to her in age didn't really want to hang with her. She's always seemed younger than she is.

One of the cousins similar in age to her has suggested blocking her from the family whatsapp group for a while if she doesn't agree to stop bombarding it with great reset stuff but I am a bit wary of isolating her more.

It's the sort of family group largely restricted to sending happy birthday messages or sharing a picture from a holiday or kids first day at school /nativity etc- lightly used, could be a fortnight at a time with no messages but now she is posting things almost every day.

Today we've all been told we need to wake up as this is a communist plot to control where we can travel freely but previous ones have all been about WEF wanting to control us, which given its members are private companies, is the opposite from communism.

One of my other cousins will snap soon enough, I suspect, and tell her she is an idiot 😔

I neither believe nor disbelieve - crazy theories have been proven to be true, and also lies. In terms of your cousin posting to the family WhatsApp group, why do you actually read what she posts, given that you think it’s nonsense? By reading and responding, and even thinking about staging an intervention, you’re giving her the attention she obviously wants. Just ignore her posts, scroll forward to the pics of puppies and babies.

TheLeadbetterLife · 07/01/2023 18:01

What always amazes me about these conspiracy theories is that the nefarious people behind The Great Reset or whatever supposedly wield unimaginable power, yet they can’t stop people blowing the gaff on Facebook. Seems like it would be easy enough for the Illuminati to shut my mother down, yet she’s free to wang on about these things as much as she pleases. Which is a lot.

GeorgeorRuth · 07/01/2023 20:09

My work resident CT was talking about a version of this. Electric cars will be the only cars allowed and as batteries are too expensive and have short life only 'elites' will have them there won't be second hand cars. Petrol and diesel will be banned. The cost will be elevated to exclude ordinary people. The reason cycle infrastructure is being pushed frantically is that by 2030, the vast majority of the country will not be able to afford to buy a car, so cycling will be the working person transport. Although the logic of the needing cycle paths if the majority aren't in cars hasn't been explained.

ItWasDobbinAtTheMareAndSpare · 07/01/2023 20:15

Set up a separate group called The Great Reset and say you don’t want her posts going missing on the main family group and then mute it.

I also can’t see car companies wanting to only fight for the small percentage who can afford them in that scenario. If anything electric cars should come down in price over time as we refine the technology etc or as someone else said a subscription style system.
