What the hell is going on with me?

Recently I’ve had a lot of episodes of the sweats. Ive always been a naturally sweatier person and shower twice a day, but this is different to normal sweating. It’s episodes where I can physically feel myself sweating- it feels like my body is sort of clammy and almost cold, but im hot and drenched in sweat and I can actually feel myself sweating profusely. You know when you’re in a scary or frightening situation and you can feel yourself physically sweating? It’s like that but for no reason. I’m not anxious at all and it just randomly happens.

im 25 so it’s not the menopause and I don’t have a fever (I’ve checked several times with a thermometer, both when the sweating episodes happen and when they’re not happening- my temp is always normal)

our heating isn’t on either- it was on earlier so the house isn’t cold, but it’s not roasting either. It’s the kind of temperature you would wear a hoodie but not be cold. I’m normally a freezing person anyway and I’m usually chilly (that’s normal for me!) all the time apart from these episodes where suddenly I feel hot and the sweat is literally pouring off me, and I feel all cold and clammy. It’s like I’ve been out running or in an uncomfortable position but I’m not I’m lying in bed chilled or I’m sleeping!

does anyone know what this is and how I can stop it? I’m not sick and I don’t have any of the bugs going about. This has been going on for maybe 2 months or so on and off. It happens sometimes during the day but it’s much worse at night. I was clean before going to bed and slightly chilly and now I’ve had one of those episodes and I’m having to change my pjs, wash my face and my hair is soaked with sweat too so I’ll have to wash that in the morning now

I noticed I had night sweats after covid for a few months but I've also had them with pneumonia. It was what is know as ' walking pneumonia' so I was up and about and felt very tired but really didn't believe I had pneumonia. It could be hormonal as well or an infection. I would get a consultation with a Dr as I'm just mentioning my experience.

Hi OP. Any chance you could be pregnant? Hormones did this to me with my first pregnancy. I am usually someone who really feels the cold but I kept sweating instead.

If not that then maybe worth asking your GP.

Whatmarbles · 07/01/2023 02:00

You could be prematurely menopausal, I would have a chat with your GP.

Adultchildofelderlyparents · 07/01/2023 02:10

It could be something wrong with your thyroid. I would definitely see a doctor if this has been going for months already.

lifeinthehills · 07/01/2023 02:15

Have you had blood tests lately?

FurryDandelionSeekingMissile · 07/01/2023 02:15

You need to go to the doctor. There are a lot of things that can cause night sweats and other sudden sweating, many quite minor but some extremely serious.

HouseIsOnFire · 07/01/2023 03:27

I had this when I had the mirena- have you changed any hormonal contraception?

DrManhattan · 07/01/2023 12:02

Over active thyroid?

THIS
with bells on
see your GP
you need a full set of blood tests and possible other tests to try and rule out the more serious issues that can present with sweating especially the kind you describe/night sweats.

Ludo19 · 07/01/2023 12:06

Another vote for thyroid. Before I was diagnosed I could hold my hand up and watch the sweat run off. My thyroid was overactive.

KimberleyClark · 07/01/2023 12:06

Ask to have your thyroid checked - could be overactive.

SchnauzerEyebrows · 07/01/2023 12:07

I have this OP. It's absolutely HORRENDOUS. It's called Hyperhidrosis. I'm having an operation next month (NHS) to essentially cut off my sweating to my scalp & face. The looks some people give me when it's dripping off my face, is really upsetting. I totally get you. I'm the only person driving around in January with the air con on

KimberleyClark · 07/01/2023 12:08

Also have you been taking ibuprofen, as that can cause night sweats.

ThreeblackCats · 07/01/2023 12:09

Don’t rule out the menopause. My friend had been through the menopause before 30. The only reason she realised she was going through the change was because she was secretary to a gynaecologist and he recognised her symptoms.

Sorry if this panics you, but it’s a possibility you should be aware of.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 07/01/2023 12:09

Night sweats were one of my diabetes symptoms when I was first diagnosis.

I echo PPs who have said GP and investigations.

Trianglesquarerectangle · 07/01/2023 12:10

You need to go to your GP. I don't wish to frighten you but it can be a sign of Lymphoma.

KangarooKenny · 07/01/2023 12:16

It sounds hormonal.

DNBU · 07/01/2023 12:35

Just see your doctor

seineingefrohrenerpimmel · 07/01/2023 13:12

You need to go to the GP.
It could be one of many things.
Could be premature menopause
Could be thyroid
It needs to be checked out with blood tests asap.

Chittering · 07/01/2023 13:23

Go to the doctor. A full blood count will help find out what's happening.

IseeBrigadoon · 07/01/2023 14:08

Haematology nurse here. Please go see your GP. Probably nothing serious that can be explained. But safer to go and check.
