How do you deal with 'we're crazy' types

I'm more of a quieter type, and I always struggle with people who label themselves as 'we're mad us, ignore us, we're a bit crazy that's all.'

I've had a few in different jobs. I imagine they think I'm really boring, I struggle with social anxiety and I can make basic conversation at work but I just struggle to be like the above.
I usually just laugh and smile when they say stuff like this, I don't really know how to react at all.

Yeh, people like this can be dull! i know a quartet of women who fit this bill, they have a nickname for themselves that would suggest they're brave, wild, trying anything Shock it's hilarious. But that's where the hilarity ends.

DuplicateUserName · 05/01/2023 18:46

I think most people just politely laugh or smile, don't they?

No need to overthink it.

JoyPeaceSleep · 05/01/2023 18:46

In answer to how to deal with them, I think I like to 'connect' with people if that doesn't sound to intense for work but sometimes all the hyperness can keep you at a distance. They only feel safe with other people just like them. I don't rally care. It can be annoying though. There's one at work and I don't think she has ever allowed me to finish a sentence, not once! She's probably decided I'm boring but I think she's boring in terms of zero conversation skills, no reciprocity at all.

Most people who describe themselves as "mad", crazy, or worse, "zany" are deeply dull and boring...

jays · 05/01/2023 18:48

Oh I hear ya! The ‘you don’t have to be crazy to live here, but it helps!’ brigade. I don’t know how to deal with it either, I just sit there like a miserable cat in a bath until they aren’t there anymore. I feel your pain.

pigsDOfly · 05/01/2023 18:48

In a fairly long life I've always found it best to avoid the 'I'm crazy, me' types.

They're usually extremely tedious to be around.

Just smiling, as you are, and then ignoring them sounds like a very good way to deal with them.

Whatever you do don't try to be like them.

Nod and smile.

Smile, nod and most importantly don't bite. It's all bait to corner you and bore you witless with some story involving them and a piece of cheese. Speaking from bitter experience.

Hillrunning · 05/01/2023 18:58

I'm what way do you want to deal with them? By that I mean, what's your end goal? To make friends? Get them to leave you alone?

Agree.
My sister is like this - she believes that she's hilarious.
We've been NC for years.

Lkydfju · 05/01/2023 19:00

When people say this I inwardly cringe; often I think they’re self conscious and worried people will think they’re boring. I just smile and nod

Scurryfunge12 · 05/01/2023 19:00

People who describe themselves that way are usually not crazy but just attention seeking try hards.

Worse are the posts on Facebook when a group of girls are going on a hen night or some such event and they write things like ‘’(place name)’s not going to know what’s hit it!’’

🤣🤣🤣

arethereanyleftatall · 05/01/2023 19:01

Op - you do know that it's fairly common knowledge that anyone who says 'I'm crazy, me' is always dull as dishwater and it's a cover to hide that?

XenoBitch · 05/01/2023 19:06

YANBU
I find that anyone that describes themselves as xyz are often far from it. If you are indeed "crazy", then we will all know without it being spelled out.

Cheeeeeeese · 05/01/2023 19:11

I think it just makes me feel really boring even though I shouldn't. I literally have no idea how to react and it makes me feel awkward. I guess just nodding and smiling is the best.
