To want to know how badly I've messed up my car?

Car is a Citroen Picasso if relevant.

Coming out of a car park, had kerb/great verge all along left side. Should have driven straight out but didn't think it through as exit was to left so tried to come out at an angle. Heard a horrible grinding sound. Panicked, and reversed and more horrible grinding.

Looked underneath and the metal stuff has separated a bit as per pictures. Have I completely broken it? Will all the underneath need replacing? Any ballpark figure to fix (ie how many £k?)?

Had to drive home and nothing seemed amiss with actual driving, no warning lights.

The pictures don't clearly show anything really

HappyTalkingTalkingHappyTalk · 05/01/2023 15:26

Can’t see what it is at all?
Pop it to a friendly garage and ask them to have a look and see what it needs booking in for.
It might just need welding.

NCForQuestions · 05/01/2023 15:28

No idea what that's a photo of.... The plastic trim of the bumper? The wheel trim?

What did you hit? The wheel? The bumper? The engine cover? The exhaust?

Need to be much more clear.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 05/01/2023 15:29

You need advice from a mechanic/garage as none of us can work out what you've done.

Dartmoorcheffy · 05/01/2023 15:30

Just take it into a garage and get a quote. Nobody on here can really tell you without looking at the damage properly.

MogTheForgetableCat · 05/01/2023 15:30

Sorry, it's really hard to take pictures underneath. Basically part of the metal underneath which should be joined has scraped so badly it's come apart a bit. I will be taking it to get fixed ASAP but just wanted a bit of a guesstimate of the cost so I can stop worrying about it so much.

Looks like you've bent the sill. Less than £1k for a guess. Almost certainly not serious and you could just leave it - although that area will rust more quickly as you've scraped the paint off, but rusty sills are common on old Picassos anyway.

I scraped the underneath bit, in-between the two wheels on the left side. The big main metal sheet bit underneath.

Sill separated from floor pan by the looks of things.

spot weld, re spray, re rust proof floor pan... 3 or 4 £100 ?
def under 1k.

Depends on age of car but you need a couple of quotes first if its worth doing or just slap some under seal over it.

MogTheForgetableCat · 05/01/2023 15:36

Thanks, fingers crossed it is less than £500. Although I'm still so angry at myself, what a huge waste of money.

The car is just under 5 years old so was hoping it would do us for many years to come.

Could you claim on insurance?

Chinesewhisperss · 05/01/2023 15:40

I've done this twice in the last year... same bloody car park too! Both times my car needed two new doors 😭 cost us £4k each time

user12345678213 · 05/01/2023 15:41

Then get a good repair, ask around for a good small body shop in your area.
If you want to keep the car, then it ll be worth it in the longer run.

Yes it is annoying, i pulled over for a car the other day & hit a rock that came up and dented the sil, pulling out and respray was £250 on a newish Skoda, main dealer quote was over £800.

Takeitonthechin · 05/01/2023 15:42

If you are I insured, your car insurance should cover it.

BabyOnBoard90 · 05/01/2023 15:45

I've done that a few times. Realised it was bad with everyone on the street staring at me.

All you need to do is replace the tyre. £20-40

SinnerBoy · 05/01/2023 15:48

Look up coachworks and car body repairs near you. Go round to 3 or 4. At least one will give you a ridiculous quote.

It looks as though it can be beaten into place and welded. It's quite a lot of paint, it'll need to be rubbed back to metal, primed, base coat and topcoat.

In the Northeast, I'd expect it to be about £400.

The tyre? What on earth!

Also, who is selling tyres at £20-£40

LIZS · 05/01/2023 15:52

Is it the sill running under the doors or affected the doors too?

MogTheForgetableCat · 05/01/2023 15:55

£4k? Please no!

It hasn't affected the doors at all, it's all underneath.

I'm southeast sadly so I guess looking at several hundred. So annoyed at myself.

I should also say my car is a year old BMW so that's also why the repair work was costly! Hopefully OP yours won't be as much. Both times I hit the car I was stressing and rushed. I've learnt my lesson the hard way! x

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 05/01/2023 16:00

You can't really tell how bad the damage is from the pictures.

mm40 · 05/01/2023 16:03

It’s the sill by the look of the (not very good) pictures. I would think no more than £2-300 from a a sensible guy (or a girl) in an independent garage.

Where from? 1967?

GladAllOver · 05/01/2023 16:07

When is your MoT due? If you just patch or paint over it that will fail.
