Part of a family business and my sister who has been involved for not that long has become very successful within it and now wants to set up her own business to make more money.

AIBU to feel a bit sad about this?

Of course from a business perspective we out many hours and time into training her etc and just feel it's a bit premature really.

Also just feel a bit sad by it and unexpected.

NC as of course want to remain anonymous

@Testina 😂 it really is so so difficult to run a business. Obviously it's possible there are many many business owners out there that manage it much more successfully than I do but fuck me IMO that people who don't run a business struggle to understand. The level of responsibility stress constant BS from staff I sometimes wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

@Testina lol thank you - when you say it cold enough good for business do you mean if she tried it and it didn't work out? And came back? You think it might set a good precedence is that what you mean?

I think it’s a bad precedence if she comes back thinks she can do that over and over again!

But if she gives it a go (say it’s website design) and she sharpens her practical skills and builds up a client base but then realises she hates chasing invoices, doing tax returns, deciding how to advertise, dealing with her admin staff’s constant sickness… well, then she might be a nice increase to your business by bringing her clients and skills back in.

I’m not saying offer her the soft landing that your door is always open for a job to return to… but I wouldn’t do the opposite and warn her that if she goes, she goes. Keep it unsaid so that you can decide in your favour.

Of course, she may go from strength to strength. In which case, also good not to cut off ever working together! You might want to collaborate.
