I cracked a molar tooth in November and it took 3 dental appointments before my dentist agreed that it was cracked and had to come out. Last weds I go and she tried to pull the tooth for an hour, sectioning it and even asking her superior to help, but it's left me with 4 roots that I need to see a surgeon for. Thats meant to happen sunday on a fit me in at the end kind of thing.

Now comes the fun bit.. recovering from 2 hours of yanking and cutting will take a while but 3 days ago the pain started getting more intense, and worse until today I have an abcess on the premolar next to it... I am on antibiotics.

I've looked at the tooth and it's cracked too. How do I make her see that and offer to help me? Im so fed up of being in dental pain and I don’t want to be told wait and see.

I did that before when I had two teeth issues and it took 6 months, 12 courses of antibiotics, 2 dentists, 1 oral surgeon and a trip to A&E to finally sort out.

You have my sympathy. A cracked tooth is agony. I hope you can get it sorted out swiftly.

It might seem stupid but I’m really scared that she won’t believe me which is what happened last time.

Can you see a different dentist?

Ludo19 · 04/01/2023 18:04

Just tell her, that is if you see her again you want a full examination of the tooth. She sounds a bit inept.

Oucht · 04/01/2023 18:17

It is her I’m seeing. She likes to do things simply and take things one tooth at a time. I know I have the 4 roots left that need removing asap but the pain from this cracked premolar is making me climb the walls.

No it’s my usual one I’m booked with and only as an emergency.

At this point I think your dentist should see you but the main option is likely to be have antibiotics and painkillers and request the premolar out on Sunday as well as the molar.
I wouldn’t be attempting to extract a premolar when you obviously have a history of difficult extractions and have an oral surgery appointment anyway (on a Sunday!).
I guess a root canal could be started on the premolar if it’s restorable but it sounds like it may be for the bin?

Goodness, I’d be changing dentist asap if it was me!

I’ve been on antibiotics since it was done. The Sunday is because they do not have an oral surgeon in the practice but a visiting one who deals with their implant patients on a Sunday.

I do not have a booked slot with him but was told by the main dentist to be there at the end of the day 7pm and that their visiting surgeon will squeeze me in purely because of the mess I’ve been left in.

It was that was that or wait for a hospital referral on nhs which would have taken ages so having to pay £300-£500 for the private roots to be ground out my jaw.

I was reminded of my early experience by your great experience. I went through the same thing two years ago. At this point, I believe your dentist should examine you, but the best course of action is likely to be to take antibiotics and painkillers and ask to have both the premolar and the molar out on Sunday. For me, a root canal filling is better than an extraction. When I was given a sedative for tooth extraction, I was aware enough to follow directions but uninterested enough to not pay attention to what was happening. I was told to take an additional 5mg of prednisone on the day of the procedure, and that was successful. But I was merely receiving a local anesthetic.

I’m seeing her today and going to ask about Sunday but I know I’ve only been slotted into a ten minute slot at the end of the day. 6.50pm when they shut at 7pm so it is highly unlikely to happen… that’s if she agrees it’s cracked.
Thats my first hurdle as she didn’t believe me last time.
