What would you do - Puppy dilemma

Hi! Less an AIBU and more a what would you do ..

If you had a 20 week old puppy and the whole family had to go to an important event would you ..

1. Put puppy in a kennel overnight (you can't leave them evenings only here, has to be all night) that he's only been to once for a half day puppy morning.

1. Leave them at home by themself (would be from 6pm to 10:30pm)

1. Neither, you'll have to cancel the event or you or your DH will have to miss it.

(Please be kind, I'm new to the whole puppy thing and know I might be getting things wrong. That's why I'm asking!)

If the dog is used to being home alone for 4-5 hours at a time then that should be just fine. I don't think at 20 weeks old my dogs were comfortable being home alone for such a long time yet, that happened more when they were a bit older and calmer. At 20 weeks they were left for an hour tops I think, you need to slowly build up the time.

As others have said OP you do need to build it up so he's used to spending some time alone, hopefully you've been doing this already.

Filled frozen hollow bones are useful for this (I buy the sterilised hollow ones from Amazon) and kongs. I soak the kibble in boiling water for an hour before mushing it up and stuffing them, then freezing.

@EndlessRain1 sorry , I see we're both guilty of misreading.

Leave the pup at home. Give him a good walk to tire him out, make sure his tummy is full. 4.5 hours is fine. Obviously make sure there's not anything he could seek out and destroy while you're out.
