If you have very curly hair I have a question

Do the ends of your curls get twisted and matted? My youngest has long very curly indian hair but when I try to do curly hair method sometimes the curls get twisted and matted which is then difficult and painful to brush out.
Can I ask if there any good detangling conditioners and also any recommendations for brushes? We have a tangle teaser but his hair is very thick and it seems to miss a lot.
Thank you!

Give it a good trim. Don't brush when dry. Ever
Rake conditioner through when wet with your hands.

CBAironing · 03/01/2023 22:06

As above. Never brush when dry. Only wet. Get a spray bottle filled with water and any conditioner for refreshing curls. Don’t shampoo too often. Try co-poo instead to refresh with conditioner only. Regular deep conditioning treatments (weekly or fortnightly). Denby brushes are amazing. Google the curly girl method.

Notimeforaname · 03/01/2023 22:28

As above. Shampoo once a week if you can get away with it, some conditioner mixed with water in a spray bottle every day.
Try a wide tooth comb or afro comb and section hair off, hold hair at root and comb lightly from the bottom up.
Keep spraying as needed. Softly scrunch dry.

WineAndDontDine · 03/01/2023 22:30

I second the trim comment. Mine only doss this when I have split ends. Turns into hay and becomes hard to brush!

Notimeforaname · 03/01/2023 22:31

Also, silk pillowcase.

johsq20 · 03/01/2023 22:33

My curls never get matted. Don't comb when dry - if you do, do it in sections & work your way from the bottom up, holding as you go so you're not yanking at roots. If you don't want to wet full head, spritz with a spray bottle and at least make it damp, then finger through product.

What tangle teaser are you using - the hand held ones with no handle doesnt help me at all, but I have one that looks like a paddle brush which is a lot better & I have quite thick hair.

Dancingdragonhiddentiger · 03/01/2023 22:34

My child does. I don’t use shampoo at all any more on him. Wash with conditioner once a week and then use leave in conditioner de tangle spray every day and hand de tangle.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 03/01/2023 22:35

it’s too dry and needs way more moisture.

Aveda has great curly products, a curl enhancer and a curl controller. Honestly, just assume it will look terrible until she’s older and will spend money on appropriate products.

I don’t own a comb, brush, or any styling tool except for a diffuser for my hairdryer. I wash and put product in every day, and finger comb with the conditioner before rinsing.

Cherrysoup · 03/01/2023 22:37

Bin the shampoo. Soak hair then wrap towel round, then comb through any conditioner (Tresemme is good and thick). Don’t rinse or dry. Cantu is a cheaper brand than most curly hair products, there are leave in products.

Zooeyzo · 03/01/2023 23:16

@johsq20 I use the handheld one. I'll try the one with the handle.
Hid hair doesn't feel too dry I do put coconut oil in after and before washing which is only once every week and with a drop of mild baby shampoo/bodywash.
The matting always happens under the hair usually close to his face so I'm thinking I miss it when I brush after washing the hair.

His hair is long so I normally plait or put it up.

Stop using baby shampoo and body wash. Try just conditioner a few times.

You can try giving the coconut oil a break too and trying other leave-in conditions instead.

pearlearringgirl · 03/01/2023 23:25

I use only curls products. Also recommend a silk pillow case. And to never brush when dry, or if you do use a continuous water spray bottle (I use a little curl gel mixed in the water) to refresh and reset the curls that have been brushed out. When washing hair I always have conditioner that I leave in the ends of my hair and don’t brush this out. Use microfibre towels (I use only curls ones).

The best hairbrush is a headhog brush, really gentle on curls and doesn’t pull hairs at all, great for detangling.

My daughter has very long curly hair that used to get matted ALL THE TIME.

She tried most of the fancy conditioners and the two absolutely magical ones are:

ISANA Professional 3 in 1 Intensive Pflege; and

Garnier Fructis Air and Dry Cream

See attached photos.

Child's farm do some nice coconut based hair products for young children, you will need to condition his hair not just wash it. I've had to with DS from a very very young age. Tangle teezer wet brush, like a paddle with a handle. Brush only when soaking wet with conditioner through. Then rinse with the shower or a cup. Never brush dry, and yes to a trim if the ends still get tangled.

nalabae · 03/01/2023 23:39

Yes
use protein treatment

ThinWomansBrain · 03/01/2023 23:41

As others have said, wash infrequently - weekly is ideaal,
Use a co-wash rather than a shampoo. If my hair gets tangled or frizzy between washes, I just wet it, sometimes add a drop or two of curl reviver.
I definitely recommend co-wash rather than just using a regular conditioner on its own.
I'm currently using a product range called Only Curls, but it's a bit pricey. Cantu is brilliant, from about £5 a tube, and now readily available in Boots/Superdrug (but often cheaper in shops catering for black hair). If you find the products a bit heavy, dilute and use less.
I either apply product with my fingers, or occasionally use a wide tooth comb - poundstretcher do a fabulous comb for £1 for a pair.
Wrapping your hair in a microfibre hair turban rather than a regular towel is great - and let it dry naturally when you can. I use a diffuser on a lowish temperature if I need it to dry faster.

Brightblueskysunshine · 03/01/2023 23:46

Shea moisture products and Cantu are also very good and moisturizing for the hair. I add a few drops of oil too it to keep moisture Locked in . I have a tangle teezer comb which I basically use to comb the unruly ones down along with the wide tooth comb. If combing dry hair spray it with little moisture to easy the curls out .

Dd has really curly hair, I use some oil at her ends, shampoo once a week and only brush when it's wet with conditioner. Or sprayed down with water and conditioner, she has it braided at night to stop it getting tuggy and it's sprayed each morning.

I can't get a tangle teaser through dds curls, wet brushes are also rubbish so I use a paddle brush.

Her hair is beautiful but it needs a lot of maintenance, it's down her back and is wild.

I used cantu on her hair for a while but it didn't really work that well on her hair, I use different curl products that I can't remember the name of and their range is good.

ASCADHDBAME · 03/01/2023 23:55

As above.
Never comb dry. Only wet with lots of conditioner and very gently. Section it and comb from the ends up bit by bit.

Don't fiddle with curls after product is in and don't break curls apart too much as it can add frizz.

Silk or satin pillowcase or head wrap.

I like cantu/Shea moisture and eco styler. A denman brush or similar type.

ASCADHDBAME · 03/01/2023 23:56

Also I shampoo my hair about once a month only, but conditioner wash (co wash) 2/3 times a week and lots of moisture suited to hair type/texture and curl pattern

Zooeyzo · 04/01/2023 08:08

Thank you everyone
