Should I have a second test?

I'll try and keep it short. In my late teens I had a eye test and was told I needed glasses, mostly for reading/computer work. Since then I haven't had my eyes tested nor really worn my glasses as I should have. Fast forward 20 + years, struggling to see words when close up thought I'd finally book an eye test since it's way overdue to be told my eyesight is fine and I don't need glasses. How can I have heeded them when I was younger but don't now? And when things close up are blur? So, would ibu to book an eye test else where and get a second opinion?

An optician explained it to me when I needed them as a teen then no longer needed them (until I did years later)
It’s Something to do with how your eye changes shape as you grow and how the lens alters.
By all means have another test for a second opinion, how close up are things blurred? It’s the case for most people that things held too close are blurred, anyone who’s ever had a toddler shove something to the end their nose and say to them ‘look closely mummy’ will tell you that Grin

Eyes change (that’s why people go back for tests every 1/2 years).

how close are you holding something when it starts to go blurred and how old are you?

You should be having an eye test every 2 years to check your prescription and also eye health - opticians can spot early signs of all kinds of things

Do you drive?! If so then definitely check, you may not be driving safely

Eyes change over the years - you might need 2 pairs of glasses now - distance and reading

Thanks for the replies.
Op should say 10+ not 20, typo. I'd say if somethings around 30cm in front I can't see clearly. I don't drive so that's not an issue. I'm 33.

Definitely get your eyes checked. I wear glasses so get my eyes checked every two years, and my eyes still haven't settled. So my prescription is always changing every two years. I'm in my 20s. So it definitely can change and probably has.

Not sure how you passed the first test unless you were squinting when looking at the letters. Yes, go back and see another optician (not at the same place).

popgoesperfection · 03/01/2023 09:37

The person who tested my eyes said he could see I was squinting but the prescription would be low so he decided I didn't need any glasses. I struggled to see a couple of the letters which I told him 🤷🏻‍♀️

You might have what I have. I have awful eyesight but I can manually focus my eyes and essentially override it. For years I was told my eyes were fine and then I ended up with something called (I think) a cyclic reversion which meant my eyes couldn’t be manually focussed and they did the test and realised I was completely unable to see.

Eye tests are free every two years, however you can book one in-between - it’s about £30 - however if there is a prescription change the test is free.

You have nothing to lose - book a different opticians.

I think I'll book another but for somewhere else. I never thought to question why I don't need glasses now but did when I was younger at the time. Does anyone recommend anywhere? Not specsavers.

Don’t get hung up on previous glasses, concentrate on what you need now.

Specsavers are cheap and cheerful for glasses but their tests are a bit of a conveyer belt - Look for local opticians.

Boots are good.

popgoesperfection · 03/01/2023 15:22

Thankyou. I'll have a look what stores we have in my town.

Specsavers are a franchise, so some of their branches are crap and others are excellent.

Boots, which has been mentioned already, is generally decent.
