Milestone birthday - weekend abroad or UK?

(Apologies, posting on AIBU for traffic)

We're talking a big birthday. Fast-approaching so limits options but as it stands its out of:

  • French city (not Paris), travelling early hours on the birthday (~6am flight), 3 nights away, returning late at night with work early the next morning, OR,
  • 3-4 nights away somewhere within the UK, perhaps a nice air B&B?

If UK based would be able to leave Friday evening after work, can drive, wake up birthday morning without the stress of a 2-3am alarm/travel to airport etc and can leave at a reasonable time the evening before work. Its just that staycations don't really tend to appeal to us.

Any suggestions?

DH is 60 this year & we’re thinking of a long weekend in Ireland as we haven’t been since our honeymoon. Easy flights & a lovely city break.

In the car and it's

When are you going? If it's a coolish month then maybe a flight to Rome or Madrid? Not hot enough to sunbathe but better than here. If say April or May onwards and just for 3 or 4 days then I'd go Lake District. Or maybe Edinburgh? York ? Somewhere different from where I live ( darn sarf).

I would bother with the UK in normal circumstances, & certainly not on my birthday! Couldn’t you go a bit further? I went to Hawaii once for 5 nights, although the jet lag was murder it was most memorable & I’d do it all again.

Soz, I meant wouldn’t.
