I've seen two posts on social media referring to Twixmas! When did this become a thing?

OP posts:
Fairislefandango · 02/01/2023 12:25

Surely Twixtmas, not Twixmas. It's nothing to do with Twixes! It's a bit of a silly word, but I guess if you want to refer specifically to the period of time between Christmas Day and New Year (which yes, we know, is still part of Christmas) it's a shorter way of doing so.

catsonahottinroof · 02/01/2023 12:26

I'd never heard this phrase until this year after reading it on MN - still never heard it in real life. I agree it reminds me of Twixs and it is unnecessary as it is still Christmas.

This is disgusting, please let it not take off.

Too late, both terms have been around a good few years now. Merryneum is a Susie Dent favourite iirc.

5128gap · 02/01/2023 12:31

When I was a child in the 70s we went to a hotel in Blackpool for a Twixtmas break so it's not a new thing. I think it used to be a way of bumping up business in hospitality in the quieter time between Christmas and New year. There was usually special deals on. Which is why we went.

Ridingthegravytrain · 02/01/2023 12:37

@FromTheFront2theBack with your username I'd have thought you'd be more the merryneum brigade anyway 😂

gogohmm · 02/01/2023 12:45

Dreamt up by people with no knowledge of the history of Christmas (likely from a marketing department) ... Christmas lasts until 12th night, January 6th

Manasprey · 02/01/2023 12:54

Probably because Xmas starts in September, or possibly November 1st, for many people, so Xmas is over after the queen's speech.

Of course it's still Xmas; the 3 Kings haven't even arrived yet! Xmas decs used to be up until 6th Jan when I was a kid, but I find it too depressing going back to work with tinsel still up.

gettingolderbutcooler · 02/01/2023 12:54

It's where you forget what day it is, wonder if you're still allowed to drink Baileys at 0900 and stay in your Jim jams, realise the kids are back at school tomorrow and then spend rest of day in a panic as you scream at everyone to tidy their rooms and get stuff ready.

I prefer the term Merryneum 😆

Lol

2chocolateoranges · 02/01/2023 12:57

Our family have used Twixmas for years, travel companies use it to describe breaks away between Christmas and New year which is how I heard of it,

Dh had never heard of it.

Crimbo Limbo sounds daft.

Pixiedust1234 · 02/01/2023 12:58

The only time I've heard or read about Twixmas was on advertising by the makers of Twix chocolate bars. The in-between time was/is known as after Christmas. Once the new year has started there's no need to mention Christmas for a few months so its very clear on which time period you are referring to.

jane1956 · 02/01/2023 12:58

Made up to avoid the word CHRISTMAS, (it may upset the snowflakes)

Spect8 · 02/01/2023 12:58

Here it is the Bermuda Triangle.

Excellent piece about it here (I hope it's not paywalled).

What?

Cellotapedispenser · 02/01/2023 13:00

I absolutely love merryneum Grin. Do not relish the idea of explaining it to DC though so will stick with twixmas even if that makes me 'Too stupid'. As far as I'm concerned, in my non religious household Christmas is xmas eve, xmas day, boxing day and done. I'm aware of the olden day tradition of the twelve days but that makes as much sense as the first day of the week being Sunday, olden day tradition again.

LlynTegid · 02/01/2023 13:01

A silly name, let's refer to it still being within the 12 days of Christmas.

CarPoor · 02/01/2023 13:44

But what's wrong with Christmas? Why do we need another name for the Christmas period?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 02/01/2023 13:47

Ah it sounds a bit Dickensian "Merry Twixmas you urchins now you've had a whole 2 days off get back up those chimneys . They won't sweep themselves "

I used the word on a post (on the Christmas Topic) , I work in the days between Christmas and New Year otherwise I know I'd lay in bed till 9.30 and drink coffee all day . Like today in fact .

ThreeLittleDots · 02/01/2023 12:06

It's a made up word adopted by people too stupid to understand that it is still in fact Christmas, even up to and post NYD

Most people understand that fully well. They just want to be able to refer specifically to that period in between Christmas day and new year, which takes on a different vibe to the days leading up to and including Christmas.

Has this post touched a nerve for you?

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 02/01/2023 13:49

It’s definitely twixtmas.

But I use the word betwixt a lot, in a semi formal, half jesting manner. So it sounds fine, to me.

bridgetreilly · 02/01/2023 13:54

Now I want a Twix.

The twelfth nighters on here are so fucking tediously superior. Yes we all know about the twelve days of Christmas, that the Christmas period officially ends on the 6th of Jan and the bloody magi 'aren't even here yet'. But a lot of us are atheists who go back to work after new year's day so we really don't give a shit I'm sorry.

I just ate them all out of the leftover celebrations tub
