Is private medical insurance worth it.

I just had a quote for £138 a month for medical insurance which includes cancer care and appointments with a £500 access. This covers me, dha nd 4 kids. It does seem a little too good to be true. It was with aviva.

Does this sound right? It was only to have a look but I'm certainly thinking about it as looking at the way things are going it might be worth having?

Or am I being a drama llama? And this sounds too low a coverage price for 2 adults and 4 kids.

It does include gp appointments and diagnostics too and end of life care should it come to that

We have cover through work with AXA and it’s excellent. Don’t pay for it so great value! It’s also MHD cover (medical history disregarded) so no tedious form filling.

My work offer cash back type medical 'insurance'.

I've never signed up but it seems quite cheap.

I just can't understand what's the point in getting cash for a night in hospital etc?

Does anyone have one of these and is it any good?

I used to have this, it was a 'Saturday fund' I seem to have got more back for glasses than anything else.

I can't remember why I stopped, I was probably skint and that meant I didn't pay for dentists / eye tests so couldn't claim back.

Another question to ask is if if you have treatment for something, does it remain covered, or will it have an effect on premiums. So for example, say you have an operation on your knee which is covered by the insurance, but 6/12/24 months later you need more treatment on your knee, is it excluded from treatment?

When I had private health insurance from work, once they'd done anything on a part of you that was excluded from further treatment as it was a 'pre-existing' condition.

I have it through work for my daughter and I. I had a good experience getting some hip pain diagnosed.

My excess is £100 per year but this is a per person excess so if my DD needs something there would be an additional £100 to pay.

DH has cover via AXA for all 4 of us. It is a very expensive policy (£8k pa) so he benfit in kind tax is high. However it has covered the best part of 6 months in the Priory for me (PND), two hip pins for DC1 and in the last year alone £30k of spinal surgery and consultations for DD2. Also lots of consutant led care for smaller conditions (two DC with tendonitis needing medical letters for extra time in public exams), reconstructive surgery after childbirth that would not have been given on the NHS (if your tampons are falling out just use pads......). However the list of what is not covered is also significant (only 6 sessions of physio each pa,wouldn't cover DC1 needing an impacted tooth being pulled down that the orthodontist couldn't cover - but would pay for it to be extracted when it wouldn't descend, wouldn't cover anything other than diagnostics for osteo etc).

That does sound about right, it will depend on many factors, whether it’s basic or comprehensive cover etc. what additional benefits you have included within that quote, I would recommend getting quotes from all providers so you are able to compare and decide what benefits (if any) you would like to include. Virtual GP, health checks, gym membership.

the last time I renewed my policy for my family we included optical, dental, gym membership within one policy and overall we have saved a lot of money.

asked the broker we used to see whether they are able to save you money - https://www.myhealthprotected.co.uk/
