To think my best friend should have been more aware that she, her dd and her dh didn't have an allergic reaction to shampoo/pillow/whatever

... but had nits?

She was round on Friday. I raised a but it was dismissed.

I love her dearly, but she is a bit of a hypochondriac.

Is that what she thought they all had an allergic reaction?

2sugars · 04/02/2008 09:26

Mmmm, MML.

Silly moo! If it was her first visit from the unwanted guests, I can kinda understand her being embarrassed, but to convince herself that they've all got an allergy is mad! Especially, if you are best friends. I remember when my best friends kids first got it, she was on the phone to me in a flash, screaming for help!

RosJ · 04/02/2008 09:43

It is embarrassing to have this "allergy" as an adult....I had nits 4 years ago, before I had children or really knew any. No idea how I got them, but got strange/dirty looks from pharmacists when I explained that the stuff was for me, not kids. At least she has an excuse!

2sugars · 04/02/2008 10:31

LOL! The only time I've ever heard of someone getting them who didn't have kids was someone having an affair! They caught them via afaireeee's kids!

Now that's sweet justice

BroccoliSpears · 04/02/2008 10:36

Are nits embarrassing then?

fedupwasherwoman · 04/02/2008 10:39

I caught nits just after ds2's birth and hadn't a clue why my scalp was so itchy. I even discussed my itchy scalp with my GP at the 6 week post-natal check-up but she didn't investigate just said it might be due to hormonal changes post birth.

I was mortified when nursery called to tell me that ds1 had nits and I checked myself to find out that was what I had too !

I think we possibly both had them for a couple of months before nursery spotted them on ds1.

So, yes if you've never had nits before its possible to be unaware of the possibility and look for other reasons. After you've experienced nits though you're always on the lookout

We took my son's bf on a camping trip for a fortnight last summer. Turns out he'd had an "allergic reaction" shortly before leaving home. He passed said "allergy" onto all bar one of us and our friends' children as well. Needless to say, we spent the last four days of our trip combing hair like OCD people.

Sometimes it seems it's not the first thing people think of. Or maybe your friend was simply refusing to countenance the possibility? Did you mention it?

duchesse · 04/02/2008 10:47

bf= Best friend

Desiderata · 04/02/2008 10:50

I don't know, Broccoli. I've never had them

It's because I smoke. They don't like it

2sugars · 04/02/2008 14:15

duchess, I didn't 'mention' it, but raised an eyebrow and looked towards her daughter, in a 'do you think that scratching's something else' kind of way.

Am ROFL at what I shall call our next outbreak: "Don't worry, Miss B, 1sugar is just undergoing hormonal changes."

Tell her that most people are allegic to headlice .

warthog · 04/02/2008 14:19

if you've never had it before, it might not be the first thing on your mind. i'm more likely to think something's an allergy before nits, but then i have eczema...

warthog · 04/02/2008 14:20

never had them before...

Niecie · 04/02/2008 14:25

I was just reading this thread and now my head is itching!

But I've never had nits either..... but maybe I should go and check.

Must admit, unless we had just had the nit letter home from school, it wouldn't occur to me either.

FAQ · 04/02/2008 14:27

I had nits when DS1 was little.......still have NO idea to this day where I got them from!

warthog · 04/02/2008 14:28

now all of my skin is crawling. wish i'd never clicked on this thread!

poptot · 04/02/2008 14:28

the first time we all got them I went to the chemist and bought itchy scalp shampoo as I was convinced I was developing a scalp condition. Was about a month before I cottoned on didn't even consider it and I'm a nurse

I know it's not very kind to think so, but after years trying to explain what they are, and many a 10 minute conversation detailing what 'white' things she's found in her daughter's hair, it's a bit of a relief that now she actually knows what they are.

I do tell her if either of my dd has them, and then I can't get a word in edgeways about how my two have given them to her girl, when in reality she was looking at dandruff.
