Will i be unreasonable to NOT accept friend request

Wtfismyname · 01/01/2023 21:03

So, ex mother-in-law (not that we actually married but long term relationship) has finally got social media. Has sent me a friend request. That is a hard no from me! But aibu? I don't really talk to them anymore, odd text here and there, civil when we speak or meet. Obviously,I am happy for them to be in GD life via her dad, but just do not want them on my social media page. That's not unreasonable right?

No it’s not

pizzaHeart · 01/01/2023 21:07

YANBU. She’s got her son to communicate with about GC she doesn’t need to know about YOUR life.

Not unreasonable at all but I find it’s better not to decline unwanted requests and just leave them; then if anyone asks you then you can say you hadn’t seen the request and must have missed it whereas if you decline it she will know

DoubleGauze · 01/01/2023 21:12

I think you're fine. My current mil is not my find on fb! I just tell her that I don't really use it anymore.

Happiestwithtea · 01/01/2023 21:15

Just ignore the request and tell her you don’t really use it if she asks.

FeinCuroxiVooz · 01/01/2023 21:16

of course yanbu.
if you wanted to, you could have a "real friends" group that she's not in, so you could share pics of her gc, but there's no obligation to do this if you don't want to

confusedlots · 01/01/2023 21:17

Don't decline it. Just ignore it and make sure you're profile is private so she can't see if you use it regularly or not. If you're ever questioned about it, just say you don't really use Facebook anymore

emilyelf · 01/01/2023 21:18

Don't accept it, you wouldn't want them to snoop around your sm. She has no business to be in your sm.

confusedlots · 01/01/2023 21:18

*your, not you're 🙈

That is very good advice! I haven't accepted yet, I don't normally accept unless someone I know anyway. But I really feel like it's, although someone I know, it's not someone I want on there. Social media like FB I feel is a very private thing, for me anyway. Or at least it should be.

I think the thing is people use Facebook in many different ways. Some people have like ex colleagues etc on there, other people keep numbers down. To her it may be just like adding an old pal from down the pub or something like that. I wouldn't read too much into it. Just ignore the request

BackBeatTheWord · 01/01/2023 21:21

Of course not. People have different boundaries and approach Social Media in different ways, I don't think it's crazy she sent the request unless you're on bad terms but it's also totally reasonable for you to not want her on your SM.

Byfleet · 01/01/2023 21:23

It’s reasonable of her to friend request you and it would be reasonable of you if you ignored it.

BeeColourful · 01/01/2023 21:24

Why would it be unreasonable? You weren’t serious, you weren’t even married.

I am hugely in favour of marriage, especially when you have children, but this is just an absolutely ludicrous and goady remark. Of course it was a serious relationship ! They had a child together.

@Wtfismyname Quite a few people have said, just leave the friend request hanging. Don't decline it. Don't accept it. If she does question it.... then just say that you don't really use facebook much.

Ineedsleepandcoffee · 01/01/2023 21:28

Just ignore I think a lot of people who aren't tech or social media aware, select to allow FB to send friend request to any contacts. They probably won't even realise.

Startwithamimosa · 01/01/2023 21:30

YANBU. If you want to, you can always accept but change the settings so she can't see anything anyway

Fluff off! They had a kid together!

Pebbles16 · 01/01/2023 21:34

I've had my (lovely) MIL on a friend request for about nine years. Love her, just not that keen on having her on my FB

Bayleaf25 · 01/01/2023 21:35

Well, we were engaged, so you know, just a bit serious. It was a 20 year relationship. Kinda, just a wee bit, serious.
@PurpleButterflyWings - thank you. I have left the request as is, as a lot of people have suggested.

BeeColourful · 02/01/2023 09:58

@PurpleButterflyWings @midnightfirework Longevity and proof of sex are not indications of seriousness.

If you haven’t made that commitment then you aren’t serious.

Willyoujustbequiet · 02/01/2023 10:25

Just accept her but put her on the restricted list - she wont be able to see anything more than the general public can see. Its a win win as she has no comeback.
