To think The Witches is a weird-ass film and borderline not suitable for children?

Its a strange one cos some parts seem go follow the completely normal fantasy, fancy-free, cute talking animals theme that you get in a lot of childrens films at Christmas. But then some parts are trippy and remind me of 80s horror films that should be on at 11pm. The costumes alone are downright hideous.

I watched it as a kid and it terrified me, I ran away from a woman in Iceland who had square type shoes and was convinced I saw purple in her eyes, poor cow was just doing her shopping and had a little me scream hysterically at her and run out the shop 🙈

This is too funny 😂 bless you x (and the poor lady who probably went home and felt puzzled)

Haven’t seen the remake.

Have always loved horror, and Roald Dahl, but the children stuck in the painting has always stayed with me.

I cannot watch this film. The hanging scene is where I stopped.

YANBU It needs a trigger warning and is not a children's film.

You sound ridiculous. It doesn't need a trigger warning and it is a children's film.

Also, what hanging scene? I don't remember that part? Confused

Idtotallybangdreamoftheendlessnotgonnalie · 02/01/2023 01:44

It's fucking terrifying, I don't know how anyone can think it's not! My parents put it on as I was an avid reader of Roald Dahl books, ended up hiding behind the sofa with my sister! We would have been 7 and 4 at the time.

I do have a secret theory that the darker your childhood the scarier you find it though.

I’ve stayed in the hotel where they filmed the original!

I am staying there for a week next month, and very much looking forward to it. 😁

Wannakisstheteacher · 02/01/2023 09:04

The original gave me nightmares for a decade. I think even seeing Angelica Huston now would bring me out in a cold sweat.

Yes, it does, as someone affected by suicide, I most definitely disagree with you.

WeDontNeedToTalkAboutJamie · 02/01/2023 11:16

I'm racking my brains but really can't remember a hanging scene.

DS1 has always refused to watch it though. I think he watched it for the first time in about 10 years this year. He's 18. Still thought it was creepy.
He hates both versions of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory too.

ODFOx · 02/01/2023 11:16

Ronald Dahl sometimes trod a fine line between funny and scary. If it wasn't for the witches faces the film wouldn't be so scary I think: more funny with the itchy scalps and square feet.

arghtriffid · 02/01/2023 11:21

It's there and not appropriate.

can you refresh our memory as to where? I did watch it a month or two ago and can't remember this either?

Rosiestraws · 02/01/2023 11:25

@arghtriffid you're not thinking of Hocus Pocus are you? 🤔

Fleabigg · 02/01/2023 11:26

The 1990 film is scary but I absolutely loved it as a child, probably would have been 7 or 8 when I saw it. I was far more scared of Jurassic Park.

There is no hanging scene in the Witches, you’re probably thinking of Hocus Pocus.

It appears you can't quite keep up with which witch film is which! It can't need that much of a trigger warning if you can't even remember what film you're talking about.

That's a really unkind thing to say. It's an easy mistake to confuse the two both films are about witches, and I can see how an unexpected hanging scene would affect someone.

JorisBonson · 02/01/2023 14:22

I'm 38 and still scared of that film.

RunLolaRun102 · 02/01/2023 14:25

The books are much, much worse.

Laiste · 02/01/2023 14:38

I know i'm in a minority, but i don't like RD's books.

Talipesmum · 02/01/2023 15:59

I think I only really understood Roald Dahl books when I read his adult short stories as an older teen. The darkness is more obvious and it all makes sense!

EdvardMunchsMuse · 02/01/2023 16:06

I don't like Roald Dahl books.
Grotesque and over the top.

arghtriffid · 02/01/2023 17:50

Sorry it's Hocus Pocus. Thank you to the kind previous poster @Idtotallybangdreamoftheendlessnotgonnalie ·

How was it unkind? The other poster said it is not a children's film and that it needs a trigger warning because of 'the hanging scene'. Neither of those statements are true, which is what I said in the first place.
