To have shouted at DH for laughing?

We’ve had our lovely dog for 4 years. She’s never been destructive, even as a puppy she never chewed or damaged anything and she’s had the full run of the house since she was 8 months old.

Just lately she’s become obsessed with my shoes. Only mine, nobody else’s. She constantly steals them, throws them around and hides them. She isn’t chewing them.

It’s been going on for about a month now. I’m finding my shoes on the sofa, in her bed, behind the chair etc.

Christmas day my son bought me some lovely new slippers. By Boxing Day one of them was missing. I was so stressed out trying to find it and DH was just laughing. Eventually found it under behind the sofa.

This morning I was getting ready for work and couldn’t find one of my work shoes. Searched high and low, couldn’t find it anywhere. Asked DH to help me, he was just laughing whilst half heartedly looking for it. Eventually found it in the garden, wet through, totally ruined. DH was in hysterics, I had to go to work in trainers (I’m a nurse). I ended up shouting at him to stop fucking laughing! AIBU to have snapped? He wouldn’t find it funny if it was his shit going missing and getting wrecked.

I’m torn. I can see why he found it funny. I can see why you’re hurt that he found it funny. I have a dog that steals too - but she only steals DH’s things. That’s because only DH leaves his shit out for her to steal. After 1000 times reminding a grown adult to look after their possessions you either have to laugh or scream. Put your things away.

There’s a reason the dogs started doing this and it needs resolving rather than living with.. Speak to a dog trainer and sort the dog out.

Glittersparkle76 · 01/01/2023 15:47

Erm...just don't leave any of your shoes where the dog can get them??

RunLolaRun102 · 01/01/2023 15:50

Could you be diabetic by any chance? A friend’s dog did the same thing to her shoes, she got diagnosed and put on insulin and now the dog has stopped.

EpicDay · 01/01/2023 15:54

My dog does this with my shoes, and only mine. We have a shoe cupboard but the rest of my family very often fail to close the door as they don’t care because it’s only my shoes. It gives me the rage because I know that it would drive them nuts if it was their shoes. So you have my sympathy!

Toomanysleepycats · 01/01/2023 15:54

I get you. We went to stay overnight with friends, they had dogs. In the morning I found one of the dogs had destroyed one of my shoes.

They thought it was tremendously funny. I didn’t as they hadn’t given any warning about the dog. I was quite miffed and although they weren’t expensive shoes and not brand new, I really liked them. No offer of compensation was made either.

BabyFour2023 · 01/01/2023 15:55

YABU. It’s funny

Georgeskitchen · 01/01/2023 15:56

Your dog has form for this kind of behaviour. It's something that is soooo easy to remedy, just lock your ruddy shoes in a cupboard!!

Nimbostratus100 · 01/01/2023 15:28

I think you need to put your shoes somewhere safe

Yes this. Just buy a shoe box.

zurala · 01/01/2023 15:59

Can I ask WHY this is funny? What makes it funny? I'm autistic and have always wondered why people find stuff like this amusing. I genuinely can't find anything funny in the situation at all. I'd love to understand.

Emmamoo89 · 01/01/2023 16:03

I would of laughed too

gamerchick · 01/01/2023 16:06

You need a shoe cupboard. You don't forget to put them in when it's sitting right in front of you.

I guess it's most close to slapstick humour, which is silly, often involves things going wrong.

I think those who are Autistic struggle most with sarcasm and slapstick type humour, which is understandable.

Yellowshirt · 01/01/2023 16:23

@Toomanysleepycats 😂

WhatNoRaisins · 01/01/2023 16:24

I get this. I'm just not one of those people who are ok with being laughed at when something bad happens to me.

Topseyt123 · 01/01/2023 16:25

I'd be furious with DH too as he is deliberately winding you up here when you are already under stress.

However, putting the shoes away in a boot cupboard, your wardrobe or in a room where the dog is not allowed to go is surely the way forward. It does sound as though the dog is homing in on your particular scent.

Coooosd · 01/01/2023 16:28

Thelnebriati · 01/01/2023 15:26

I can't imagine still finding a situation funny if the other person is really stressed by it..

Yeah this really

I'd also be really pissed off about the shoes, complete waste of money

Hugasauras · 01/01/2023 16:33

My dog buried one of mum's slippers on their land somewhere, and we couldn't find it anywhere. Six months later DDog appeared with it in her mouth on a visit Grin Quick wash and it was back to normal!

DDog is a total shoe thief and if you don't put them in cupboard, they are strewn around the house.

MissyB1 · 01/01/2023 16:33

Mybonnielad · 01/01/2023 15:36

What a vindictive thing to say.

No more vindictive than standing laughing at someone who is stressed and upset. Do as you would be done by.

Harliegh · 01/01/2023 16:39

You know the dog does it and you're not putting your shoes somewhere safe.

harrassedmumto3 · 01/01/2023 16:47

If I was stressed and running late for work, looking for my missing shoe, I'd be murderous by someone laughing.

knowsmorethansnow · 01/01/2023 16:47

I wouldn't have helped you look. You know the dog has started doing it and still leave things around.

FavouriteDogMug · 01/01/2023 16:47

I might find it funny if you were just hunting round for your shoe and it turned out the dog had hidden it, but you were not upset. If you are stressed out and late for work then it isn't funny any more. Its like if someone falls over in a comical way it can be funny but if they hurt themselves then it wouldn't be.

2FelisCatus · 01/01/2023 16:57

You seem really stressed. I would have laughed too.

Alfiexx1 · 01/01/2023 17:00

YABU

Its funny, no reason to shout, not that there is usually ever a reason to shout at your partner tbh
