To ask you to recommend me a sport?

I'm looking to take up a new sport and get healthier this year (triggered by recent illness, not a new year's resolution as such.)

I've given up my animal related sports due to work and not replacing the animals, hence having a gap to fill.

I can't think what I'd like to do but want something ideally social and team based (to make some new friends) and I'm probably better at strength Vs cardio. I wouldn't want anything like rugby or football, I don't think.

What do people do and recommend?

How about a martial art? Maybe judo or tae kwondo? If you’re reasonably tall, you could try netball. Racket sports, eg tennis, squash, badminton are fantastic to play but you do need excellent hand-eye co-ordination to be even passably competent.

Stompythedinosaur · 01/01/2023 14:12

Fencing.

Lostmyself3 · 01/01/2023 14:13

CrossFit? A good community and a good focus on health rather than aesthetics.

Proteinpudding · 01/01/2023 14:22

I do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. You feel part of a team (your club) and it's very social, but not the same pressure as an actual team sport where you play a position and need to be there for games. I find it a good mix of strength and cardio work.

I tried crossfit when I moved to a new town and wanted to make friends, but weirdly it didn't suit that at all! While everyone was super friendly and supportive, the classes were fast paced the whole way through, and no time to stop and chat at the end (due everyone being exhausted but also because the classes were scheduled back to back, so had to get out quick) So beyond smiling and cheering at each other, there wasn't much scope for getting to know anyone. Might depend on the gym set up.

Rowing? But martial arts are excellent. So many sorts as well.

RiverSkater · 01/01/2023 14:24

Netball or Hockey?

namechange3394 · 01/01/2023 14:25

Rowing!

Netball or Hockey?

I was about to suggest this too.

sanityisamyth · 01/01/2023 14:36

Scuba diving
Ice skating

LlynTegid · 01/01/2023 14:39

Park runs as one thing? If not hockey as suggested.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 01/01/2023 14:48

Cycling - social, various hill climb, cyclocross, zwift, road race, time trial - even triathlon - events if you want to be part of your club team.

Haus1234 · 01/01/2023 14:49

Hockey! Lots of clubs have “back to hockey” to learn / remember the basics and it’s very friendly.

MrsMitford3 · 01/01/2023 14:50

Rowing.

Hugely social-clubs have lots of beginner sessions and you can do as much or as little as you want. Fantastic for overall fitness.

If you want to give me a rough geographic area I can suggest clubs-or DM me

defi · 01/01/2023 14:51

Aerial sports- pole dancing, hoop and silks. I started a year ago my strength has improved massively and I've made some lovely friends

faffadoodledo · 01/01/2023 14:54

Tennis! There's always a Rusty Rackets group at clubs for adult learners. You'll meet others, and there is nothing like bashing a ball hard to make you feel saner!
Plus it's a sport you see octogenarians playing, so you'll have a long career!

HiScore · 01/01/2023 14:56

Netball, it’s a great team sport and good for meeting new people.

MyCatIsAFuckwit · 01/01/2023 14:58

BMX, as in racing. So much fun. Local clubs do adult lessons and will lend equipment needed.
Bouldering (climbing without ropes) Can loan shoes until you decide if it's for you.
Both highly social and can be taken as seriously as you want.

Southwig22 · 01/01/2023 15:28

Some genius suggestions thank you!

Interested in martial arts for sure, I did judo as a child for a while but will have a look into which ones are best for an adult. Is it very social though, as it's not a team sport?

Rowing also sounds quite cool, although I'm near the coast and not too keen on getting dipped in the sewage ridden sea?!

I did enjoy hockey and netball at school too - stupidly didn't realise they'd have adult clubs!

Rock climbing? There is a lot of necessary idling, so it’s very social.

EndlessRain1 · 01/01/2023 15:37

Hockey is fun. Tennis is social. Paddleboarding or kayaking if you water near you. There often seems to be clubs for this for the social aspect.
You could also join one of those crossfit type gyms, they are gyms (obviously) but everything seems to be very social/ team based. Or a running club.

modgepodge · 01/01/2023 15:40

Netball is really popular where I am. Lots of clubs run a ‘back to netball’ session which will be aimed at people who haven’t played before or haven’t played since school. You can then play in social leagues or a more competitive league. Joining a club is likely to be quite social too.

jooliewolters · 01/01/2023 16:12

Volleyball! 6v6 in winter and, if you're lucky enough to live near a club with beach courts, 2v2 in summer.

Women's recreational footy is full of women deciding to have a go at a new sport for all the reasons you give. Usually on artificial grass so not muddy and often 5v5 or 6v6

DoNotGetADog · 01/01/2023 16:26

Tennis!
