Was I unreasonable to accept this refund?

Yesterday evening DH and I got a takeaway from our local Indian takeaway. I ordered it online for 7.30pm delivery. When it arrived, there were two items missing - one was a starter and the other a portion of rice (mine). I couldn't share DH's rice as he had mushroom pilau which I don't like, mine was plain pilau.

I called the takeaway and explained. They said the driver wouldn't have time to come back with another portion of rice until at least an hour's time, by which time my half of the curry would be cold (DH and I were sharing a curry). He said this was the best he could do given how busy they were. He wasn't particularly apologetic tbh and just said "we're busy it's human error, it happens".

So I was like fine, but can you at least offer to refund us the items we are missing since we aren't able to eat them but we've paid for them? (Around £4.50 total). He said defensively (and I'm not sure if he misheard me): "I can't refund the whole bill, I'll be out of pocket!!" I said, "no, I didn't say the entire bill, but we are missing items that we've paid for...?" He then said I'll tell you what I'll do, I'll refund £10 back to you as a good will gesture (the total bill was £22). I said that's lovely, thank you very much.

I then had a disappointing tea of oven chips with my curry!

Anyway... relayed this story to my friend this morning and she said I can't believe you took a tenner back off them! I said what do you mean, he offered, I just accepted 🤷‍♀️ She said if it were here she would have just said "no need for that, just refund me the cost of the missing items please". She said I've now swindled them out of £5.50, even though the takeaway owner offered me that money for the inconvenience.

Was I unreasonable to accept the £10 refund?

@tiredmama23 Oh absolutely! I read the whole thing, you have a captivating writing style!

😂😂

Why thank you.

I would highly recommend a rice cooker. If you just normally order plain rice you can do your own - it can be cooked and kept warm without you having to oversee it while you wait for your delivery. They’re a game changer for me.

Brefugee · 01/01/2023 11:47

No. I wanted pilau rice 🤷‍♀️ thought that was obvious 😂

but you could have waited for replacement rice then if that's what you really wanted. Eat the Bhajis while waiting if you were so starving. You shove the food you've received in a warm oven and ... no drama. Oven chips instead of rice? bonkers

Emmamoo89 · 01/01/2023 11:47

I would of accepted it. You did nothing wrong x

tiredmama23 · 01/01/2023 11:47

RTFT. My friend's comments were lighthearted. But it made me think... was I a CF?! So I turned to the authority on all matters CF that is Mumsnet, for their verdict.

😁

@Brefuge

I could have waited for rice yes, but that would have been an hour's wait and I was starving. The chips were ready in half that time.

Oh wow! I need one of these.

But first, I need to put rice on the shopping list 😂

We aren't super close per se, but we do message at all times of the day with random toddler issues. We have similar unruly pain in the arse toddlers. This morning it was nice to text about something more normal like food 😂

Happy 2023 OP get some fresh air!

@RiderOfTheBlue

Hmm would that not have burned the curry? 25 mins on 180/200 in the oven when it was already cooked? 🤔

So you put it in for the last 5 mins or so, just to heat up again.

YANBU to accept the refund but YABU to have mishandled the crisis. I can only assume you've used up all your crisis handling skills at work.

LouLou198 · 01/01/2023 11:56

Yanbu. I would have accepted the £10 for the inconvenience and spoilt meal.

PenanceAdair · 01/01/2023 11:57

No, not unreasonable. You didn't have the food you paid for, he offered the refund. You deserved the compensation for both incomplete meal/time making another.

He would've been an arsehole if he only offered to refund the cost of the meal.

tiredmama23 · 01/01/2023 11:58

@Ursuladevine

An age? 😂
Literally 4 or 5 messages on WhatsApp. A total of a 3-5 minute exchange. Not sure what's controversial about that but MN never fails to amaze me!

And thanks for the instruction to get fresh air. I've actually just returned from a walk with my toddler if that's ok with you.

ABBAsnumberonefan · 01/01/2023 12:27

Why didn’t you just put the curry in the oven on low to keep it warm and wait 😭

OP why would you put it in at such a high temp! It’s already warm just put it in on LOW to keep it warm 😭 come on now.

AGoodDayForSomebodyElseToDie · 01/01/2023 12:34

YABVU - oven chips with a curry are an abomination. Mind you, mushroom pilau is also U, so you're well matched with your DH!

Accepting a reasonable offer of a partial refund, however, is entirely fine and your friend is bonkers.

ThisGirlNever · 01/01/2023 12:40

Aldi do a fairly good pilau rice in a white plastic tub. Don't buy the pouch version, it's vile.

Maybe keep a tub in the cupboard for emergencies.

tiredmama23 · 01/01/2023 10:53

I was just so looking forward to rice! 😩 haven't had a good curry in ages. Also by time my chips cooked the curry was lukewarm at best 😞

You didn't warm the curry back up? This whole thread is so weird.

tiredmama23 · 01/01/2023 13:24

@ABBAsnumberonefan

That was the temp needed to cook the chips! 😂
