I wish Andy Stewart was still alive. I remember NYE at home when we were children and he was always on.

Who do you remember (thinking back to your childhood) on NYE?

@TheShellBeach omg me too. Donald where's yer troosers. Him and Moira Anderson singing every year.😂

Octopus45 · 31/12/2022 17:20

My parents alternated hosting Christmas with another family. Silly games (which I always found a bit cringey tbh), a buffet. The darkest haired person being sent outside with coal a minute before midnight. Singing Auld Lang Syne. I never remember the TV being on.

Ursuladevine · 31/12/2022 17:20

How old are you? I’m early forties and no idea who you’re talking about!

I'm 60 so probably round some age as OP. Andy Stewart and Moira Anderson were huge in Scotland especially at NY.
Glad to say time has marched on and styles have changed.

My aunt’s annual house party. We used to be allowed to stay up for a bit then my cousins and I and my were bundled to bed, then carried home (to the next road) half asleep by dad after midnight. Then we got old enough to party. It was an open house. My aunt always played Blanket on the Ground and the whole street came out to sing Auld Lang Syne. My dad having black hair was asked asked to re-enter the house first and let in the new year (I think he represented coal). Some goings on down the years! My aunt and my dad both passed away this year, so the midnight toast will be bittersweet this year.

Happy New Year to all

In Scotland your first footer should ideally be dark haired and come with Black bun and whisky.

I quite liked watching Andy Stewart and Moira Anderson at NYE. Was a bit of a tradition although I'm not Scottish and my parents are Eastern European.
Good old sing song and much bonhomie.

Then Jools Holland came on the scene. Need I say more?

DWYT is our DD's least favourite Scottish song.

Not at all, when life seemed so much simpler (because my parents were still alive and healthy and we lived somewhere small where everyone knew each other).

Nostalgia always makes things look better.

TheShellBeach · 31/12/2022 17:44

Although I like it.

Oops misread sorry!

No nostalgia, never liked NYE. Have looked at the tv mag, as usual a big fat nothing.
Thought I might stream 'Belfast' film but it still looks quite expensive? (Not great at tech!) :-)

LlynTegid · 31/12/2022 17:47

Perhaps an unusual memory is that when I was young, New Year's Day was not a public holiday in England. My dad getting up and leaving the house at 8am dressed in a suit and tie and with his large winter coat on, to go to work (he could walk to his office then).

TheShellBeach · 31/12/2022 18:00

We watch BBC ALBA on NYE these days.
All the Scottish stuff.
So much better than Jools Holland IMO.

The swinging kilt. The Scottish dancing. Blimey, we knew how to have fun in the 60s.

been and done it. · 31/12/2022 21:24

Andy Stuart..God I remember him and hated him. Think he put me of NYE for ever.

PriOn1 · 31/12/2022 21:30

Scotch and Wry! That’s what I remember.

tobee · 31/12/2022 21:37

I don't really remember NYE that well as a child. I do remember it as a teen! Desperate to find a party, or cramming into a pub and to see the latest boy i was keen on!!! Large amounts of tins wondering who would be getting off with who. Lots of music takes me back to that time.

Then, a few years later, going to bed with dp (now Dh) after seeing the new year in with a pot of tea and box of shortbread watching a Seven Brides for Seven Brothers or some other musical!

tobee · 31/12/2022 21:40

I think there's an episode of The Two Ronnies with a sketch with Ronnie C as Kenneth McKellar and Ronnie B as Moira Anderson set at New Year!

TheShellBeach · 01/01/2023 00:06

Happy New Year!

My grandparents ran a pub they lived above when I was a kid, so we'd sleep over in the front room by the coal fire and nip down for midnight. They would always play New York, New York. Happy days!
