To think colleague is taking the absolute piss?

Had about 6 weeks off work with long covid, I’ve had to do so much extra work because of it. Now she’s posting all over social media that she’s gone away to Norfolk for a getaway.

It used to be a ‘thing’ that people were encouraged to get away and convalesce - particularly if it was the coast or countryside. I’d really like to see that come back into fashion because I think there are many people who would reply benefit from it.

Don’t concern yourself with it OP. It’s none of your business. If you’re struggling with covering her work you have management issue not a colleague one.

TI often wonder why people give colleagues access to their SM. None of mine are able to see what I post and I have no desire to see theirs either.

Because outside of the world of MN some people are shock horror friends with colleagues.

Not the norm on here where most people have no friends at all.

It’s not holiday leave. She’s gone on holiday whilst on a sick/fit note.

She might as well be ill in Norfolk as anywhere else.

The change of scenery will probably do her good.

LearnerCook · 31/12/2022 17:32

It's your management that you should be complaining about, not your colleague.

This exactly

Work is work and despite being on friendly terms with my colleagues I have never understood the desire to make them part of life outside work.

You don’t really sound like much of a friend Confused

mrsbyers · 31/12/2022 17:32

Good for her , sounds like a holiday will
so her the world of good

Agreed. The extra work put on other workers is nearly always a management/staffing problem.

Not the fault of the person going off sick.

TinySaltLick · 31/12/2022 17:34

As per others, issue is with your company - one is entitled to relax and leave their house when recovering from an illness

You should be pleased for her, have you sent her a gift?

Lucky for your employer that you're policing her via SM. You going to email them or just moan about it on here?

TangoAcid · 31/12/2022 17:35

I hope she has a lovely time. Norfolk is a beautiful place.

You may be Facebook friends but you clearly aren't real friends OP. So maybe do the poor woman a favour and unfriend her. Last thing she needs is some twat at work spying on her while she gets better/enjoys her holiday.

I'm pretty sure that none of my friends (of which I have many BTW), would not see fit to bitch about me on a public forum....I guess my definition of "friend" and yours are different.

Stressedmum2017 · 31/12/2022 17:36

Going in a car to a hotel or cottage is a bit different to working full time though isn't it? Just because you can do one doesn't really mean you can do the other.
If you are feeling over worked your problem is with your management not your colleague. Also unless you yourself have seen the sick note you have no idea what is on it.

purplepencilcase · 31/12/2022 17:38

You won't get any YANU here OP, in Mumsnet world no one ever takes the piss at work with sick leave!

She could well be taking the piss but sadly you can't do a thing about it!

And what a great friend you are. Resenting her for doing something nice while recovering from a horrible illness. Who needs enemies, eh?

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 31/12/2022 17:42

It's a real condition. Hope that helps.

Take it up with your manager whose job it is to ensure appropriate cover and not your colleague.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 31/12/2022 17:43

And? She has a sick note. Plus she’s gone to Norfolk not skiing in the Alps

I doubt she'll consider you a friend for much longer if she discovers that you've cast doubt on her sickness and work ethic on social media.

Mangolist · 31/12/2022 17:44

I had a holiday while on sick leave. It had already been booked before I was ill and no-one at work had an issue with it! When I got back the annual leave I'd taken for that holiday was given back - hadn't expected it to be honest - so maybe she's done the same - prebooked?

On the other hand there are the colleagues who feel it's their absolute right to use as much paid sick leave as they're entitled to, which is really not on!

LlynTegid · 31/12/2022 17:45

Hello burglars, I am on holiday, come and burgle my house.

Insensitive in any case to almost boast about it, instead of just quietly going away. I would not be happy if I was the OP.

DuplicateUserName · 31/12/2022 17:46

Hello burglars, I am on holiday, come and burgle my house.

How do you know it's going to be empty?

My adult kids stay in mine when I'm away.

saraclara · 31/12/2022 17:54

My husband was on sick leave for several months. It was really important to his recovery that he get out, keep mentally healthy, and gradually increase his activities and work out what he could and could not do. And of course, we needed to continue to operate as a family and for our children to have a normal life.

So yes, we went on holiday, had gentle and flexible days out, and tried to live as normally as possible.
People like you, OP, are the reason that it was really hard for me and his GP to convince him to go out. He was always worried that a colleague or parent (he was a teacher) would see him and assume he should be working.

chipsandpeas · 31/12/2022 17:56

i had a holiday while off work sick after a bereavement, it wasnt prebooked and very beneficial for my mental health

maddiemookins16mum · 31/12/2022 17:58

A colleague of mine has long Covid. She’s worked 90 days this year, 90.
Am I pissed off, no. The poor lass has had her life fall apart, she and her bf can’t afford to buy a house now nor can they afford to have a much wanted first baby. In fact, she’s on the verge of having to move back to her parents.
She’s skint.

Mentalpiece · 31/12/2022 18:02

A few years ago I badly broke my leg, which involved operations with plates, pins and a total of 14 months in a hip to toe cast.
After a few months of going mad staring at the walls, I went away for a fortnight's holiday.
Then spent the remaining months staring at the walls again.
My job involved a sixty mile round drive, obviously I couldn't drive and standing on my feet all day at work, which obviously I couldn't do either.
But apparently I was extracting the urine according to MN.
