I fell out with a friend of 20 years because she couldn't show me she was there for me in hard times.
I wasn't constantly moaning, bug always there to support her.

Had 2 crises I asked for support in 20 years. She couldn't give a shit.

I wanted to show her some vital info, only 2 paragraphs but relevant, for taking my employer to tribunal for discrimination which an was extremely stressful and hurtful experience. She said is that something I'd want to see?

The friendship hit the skids after that.

Oh gosh, so sorry to hear you went through that. It appears to be a common theme on MN. Too many shitty people in the world, but lots of good ones out there, it's just finding them x

What did help was when this happened, and another mate took her side so I lost 2 friends, an old friend who knew her said she was angry on my behalf for how she'd dealt with it ( horrible Dear John email)

And sent me a thinking of you text.

Such little things that made a big difference

Most people still have these qualities. Thankfully!

LeggyLinda · 31/12/2022 01:51

Sorry, I’m not sure if you’re being unreasonable or not.

but I thought I’d chuck my opinion in and say without doubt, you can clearly tell a friend by the way they relate to you. And, of course; that depends on how you treat them.

Alternatively, you could have some fun/easy gossip starting a chat in the interweb.

MardyMincepie · 31/12/2022 02:03

Listening
Remembering important stuff, especially the hard stuff. My friend messaged me yesterday as it was the 16th year since I suffered a PG loss.
Laughing together
Not agreeing for the sake of it. I don’t especially want a full on opposite view massive row but I don’t like people agreeing for the sake of it.

NorthernChinchilla · 31/12/2022 02:09

My best mate dropped everything to drive me from one end of the country to the other when I got the - unexpected - news my Mum was going to die imminently. She stayed with me till DH could get there.
Can never thank her enough

Draconis · 31/12/2022 10:15

Of course friends should be supportive in hard times but hopefully we don't have many hard times.
So, friends should be there just to go out with too. You'll need to have something in common whether that's values, beliefs or interests.
I like friends who suggest a get together or doing something interesting every now and then.
