To feel like I'll never get over this chest infection

Absolutely fed up. We've been ill for the past three weeks. Cough that worsened a week ago. Dreadful heavy feeling in my chest, hacking cough, dizziness, fever, pain when breathing. I just feel like I'll never get over it. Christmas was very quiet as we've had no energy. Thankfully DC is eating again and seems fine.

Haven't sought advice as I'm sure it's viral.

Chest infection will need antibiotics

Upyoursxmas · 31/12/2022 00:59

We've had this, and we were poorly for ages, it was really shit. Two courses of antibiotics and it's now lifting but not convinced whether it was viral and it was time that worked.
Lots of rest and fluids.

I've just had this, you probably need antibiotics

thaegumathteth · 31/12/2022 01:01

Well you aren't helping yourself but not seeking help if you think you have a chest infection

Triflenot · 31/12/2022 01:03

Yep, the same at our house.

Give it a couple of months and you will feel much better x

LulooLemon · 31/12/2022 01:05

Even if it is a virus, you can still get an infection. Seek medical opinion if you are worried. Hope you get well soon!

Itsnotalternateuniverses · 31/12/2022 01:06

I've dosed myself up with cough syrup etc. I've had fluids and pain relief as well. Given that I haven't been able to get through to our GP and wait times for 111 are over 24 hours, I didn't see the point. I'm just trying to manage but I'm fed up and getting worse.

If you still have a temp it could be a secondary bacterial infection, you need to see a GP

Itsnotalternateuniverses · 31/12/2022 01:09

I'm also stupidly hot and I'm always cold. I'm just ranting as lying here with painful chest. It just feels heavy if that makes sense. Can anything relieve the stabbing pains? I've also been waking at night coughing and struggling to breathe.

Gp in the morning based on those symptoms.

WhatsWrongWithMe1234 · 31/12/2022 01:14

Please go to the GP - I had this and I'm now on steroids and antibiotics, nearly ended up in hospital. Hope you feel better soon

mrsfollowill · 31/12/2022 01:16

Sounds like you need antibiotics in all honesty- if you cannot get through to your GP can you afford a private doc e consult? I've not done it but have friends who have and it's worth the ££ to feel better. Disclaimer I know we should not have to do this but it's an easier option if possible.

Itsnotalternateuniverses · 31/12/2022 01:18

Thank you. To be honest, I've been run down because of work, organising Christmas and helping to look after our toddler. I've just been in the mindset to push on because it's what I do.

Sounds just like what I had. 2 courses of antibiotics and some steroids made me feel loads better. Get well soon op x

Itsnotalternateuniverses · 31/12/2022 20:57

Just want to say thank you for your replies. I managed to see a GP. I have fluid on the lungs and pleurisy and now have antibiotics. Thank you for the push I needed.

It's absolutely horrible. I've had it since end of November and have had two different antibiotics. It's a lot better now after two weeks of resting. My GP told me off for not taking time off work and I'm not quite sure how I managed until the end of term!. If I don't rest though I still cough lots and I'm still very very tired.

I'd see your GP. They do say that after two weeks to not just leave it.

Scatterbrainbox · 31/12/2022 21:05

Yep. Feeling pretty bloody sorry for myself now 😕

Chickenwing2 · 31/12/2022 21:12

Try rubbing vapour rub on your feet and putting socks on before you go to sleep.

Thatweredeadtightoncheryl · 31/12/2022 21:13

Be careful of pneumonia, not called the old man's friend for nothing as it can be a silent killer.
Get onto the Dr asap, any ongoing cough for more than 2 weeks needs to be seen by a medical professional

Bobbybobbins · 31/12/2022 21:15

I've had this and finally went to GP 3 days ago with a fever I was unaware of and got prescribed antibiotics. Glad you have been seen OP.

Itsnotalternateuniverses · 01/01/2023 05:40

@Thatweredeadtightoncheryl thank you. The GP listened to my chest and there's only a bit of fluid. Hopefully the antibiotics will sort it. I've been told to get back to the GP if I get wors

I started with it about a month ago. Seemed to improve a bit and then got worse again. If I ally went to the walk in gp centre and sat for 2.5 hours, as couldn't get in at my own GP.

It's since taken two courses of different ABs and it now, a month later, feels like it's improved. Still tired and still feel run down, but the coughing has slowed and isn't waking me all night any more, and my chest feels almost normal again . I return to the GP next week (have an appointment for something else but gp says she will monitor this too) and will have it checked again to be sure but fingers crossed.

Several years ago I got really run down and it ended up as pneumonia and a hospital stay so extra careful now.

I had cold, virus illness most of December and felt broken by Christmas along with the rest of my family. I began antibiotics Christmas Eve and it’s finally cleared a week later. Hope they work for you and your feeling better soon.
