To always have a tidy round before guests (lighthearted)

My husbands friend rang earlier and asked if they could pop in for a quick visit with the kids as we haven't had a chance to see them over Christmas. I said yep of course.

I then immediately got up ran the hoover round, gave the bathroom a wipe, cleaned the toilet and generally just made sure everything was in its place. I then made all the leftovers into a little buffet and put a bowl of choccies out for the kids.

Husband said I should relax and there's no need to put so much pressure on myself. I don't really see it as pressure though I like guests to come to a clean house and feel welcome with food and drink. So yes YABU, just let last minute guests take me as they find or no YANBU

The Visitors Klaxon is one of the essential pillars of household hygiene.

Exactly this! Xmas Grin

Surely the toilet is clean because why would you leave it dirty for someone else to use in your family? Unless I'm missing the point and its not clean the actual loo but the general toilet area

Crazykatie · 30/12/2022 18:57

If I don’t OH will, I’m not the best housekeeper by any means, I work part time, he is retired so he’s got plenty of time , works well.

I mean the toilet wasn't dirty or anything but I still give it a little wipe and throw some bleach in there before visitors 🤣

YANBU, OP. Most people do this as a courtesy to their guests. But my late mother took it to extremes. The whole house had to be absolutely spotless, with the sofa cushions placed "just so" and the curtains hanging with the creases absolutely regular. Even more bizarre was that my disabled gran had a home help to do her basic housework, and my mother would go and clean my gran's flat before the home help arrived! When I asked why, the response was "If the home help sees that the flat is dirty, she'll think your gran's family don't look after her". Sad but true.

There is a suggestion for a verb for this exact thing.... 😆

I would do the same OP. When DC1 was small (18 months?) my best friend from school came round. I tidied beforehand, she later commented something along the lines of I know you only have the one (she has 4) but I was wondering how on earth you kept your house so clean and tidy with a toddler, but I saw DC1's room (on the way to the bathroom) I feel much better now its just like my kids room I was wondering what was I doing wrong. I of course replied er, I knew that you were coming I don't live like this normally!😂

Oh right I was thinking what on earth. Yes I just wipe seats with anti bac and throw in bleach too.

This is called a scurryfungle - the quick tidy up before a guest.

It's scurryfunge.

I honestly thought we were the only family to use that word! 😁

AgingLikeAFineJacobsCreek · 30/12/2022 21:24

Sorry was a typo. No we use it all the time, mainly cos we’re always scurryfunging.

YANBU OP

We don't go nuts but with around 20 minutes notice.....

  • Kids sling all the toys back upstairs
  • Husband tackles the tidy, wipe and hoover of the front and middle room
  • I clean the kitchen, wipe round the sink and toilet and give the floors a quick Sweep and spot clean

Bins emptied if needed. 😂

Luckily no visitors woipd ever need to go upstairs in my house as the bathroom is on the ground floor (old victorian terrace)

RocketIceLollie · 30/12/2022 21:52

At short notice like that I'd just tidy the living room so people can sit down, and yeah clean the loo.

fedupofthiscoldffs · 30/12/2022 22:13

Only the in laws pop with short notice but I check the kitchen and downstairs loo and let the crappy robot vac go around for 10 minutes.

If friends come then I have to clean the whole place. I have massive issues with being though of as scruffy
