To wonder why the UK became so dog friendly?

I have had several dogs in my life but I'm finding recent events in the last 2-3 years baffling.

Local ice cream shop lets dogs in - no longer go there as last time there was a massive dog blocking serving place where DC choose flavours, not sure what breed but size of a Labrador. 2 year Old's face ended up getting licked and knocked over, now DC doesn't feel comfortable around dogs. Always dogs there now but usually not that bad.

Family member has 2 labs that hate each other (no idea why) plus a history of "nipping" each other (?!) and recently they were growling at each other, teeth bared, lips rolling back. Toddler right between them with a toy. Heard the growling, got worse for about about 2mins, decided to tell toddler to move away quietly and calmly. Put myself between toddler and dogs. In law Relative went ape shit , offended. FFS. Decided we're not welcome in future if we don't accept that the dogs would "never harm a child" (like that's a reassurance).

School (primary school) is dog friendly and allowing dogs on leads in playground at pickup times which would NEVER have been accepted in my school. Including larger ones, not terriers etc - more Pointers etc.

Also, I have one of those only heard by cats repellers in my garden. It's excellent and might even keep foxes out too. (We've livestock and don't get them despite being Country)

They're not only heard by cats. Unfortunately they are heard by kids and dogs too. My neighbours have one and it makes the kids not want to play outside when it's on.

I think dogs in the playground is completely unacceptable.

I know where I live in Cornwall places have become more dog friendly simply because businesses are realising that dog owners make up a large amount of tourists and therefore they can make more money.

Absolutely, it's a commercial decision.

If you take a dog on holiday, you can't leave them in the accommodation or in your car (save for on cool, cloudy days), so they have to go everywhere with you. Shops, cafes and pubs would lose a lot of business if they didn't let them in.

TrixieFatell · 24/07/2023 08:15

I hate it, especially in places where food is served. I wouldn't take my dog into a shop or restaurant.

I worry that they are heard by rabbits in hutches etc, in other peoples gardens that have no chance of ever getting away from it.

That's a good point I hadn't thought of. Rabbits/guinea pigs/maybe birds in averies? I d9nt know how tgwg affect birds?
But yeah basically they work by only being heard by animals and young people with smaller ear canals. I think your ability to hear them stops between around 17-21yo. They are an absolute pain. Sometimes shops and trainstations even use them to deter loitering teenagers which is unfair on families and younger people just trying to get a train.

But I digress. Basically cats are a pain and I am much more bothered by their unchaperoned omnipresence than I am by an accompanied dog in a public place.

I'm not a dog person and don't like them off lead coming up to me when I'm hanging out washing and the owner saying "He's friendly, he wants to be friends". Sorry I don't want to be friends with your dog.

A local (expensive) hotel used to only allow dogs in the bar which was fair enough. Last time we went for a meal there were 3 dogs at tables complete with water bowls that I nearly tripped over and one kept barking wildly every time the service bell rang. They've lost my custom.

Stop assuming everybody loves dogs - they don't.

Whereare you hanging washing where random dogs come up to you?

MarysGirlChildWasLate4ChristmasDay · 24/07/2023 11:41

My chickens, rabbits or kids can't hear it. Weird. Maybe it is broken and just a placebo effect.

Or maybe the barky dogs on either side keep cats away.

Presumably a front garden.

Yellowlegobrick · 24/07/2023 11:42

I hate it, there are few places left where i live that don't encourage dogs and far more poorly trained, badly socialised or reactive dogs than there were too.

People used to leave dogs at home when going for a meal or to friends homes, now there seems to be a sense of entitlement to bring dogs everywhere.

RaraRachael · 24/07/2023 12:16

@Applescruffle we don't have gardens so it's a shared drying area. As it's right by the beach it's popular with dog walkers.

Its probably the barky dogs keeping them away because kids can 100% hear it. They can't see our neighbour's one over the six feet fence and they complained about the noise before anyone knew it was there. I looked out the window (that they can't reach) into neighbour's garden and sure enough, they had one in the middle of their lawn.
Maybe it's why the dogs are barking?!

MarysGirlChildWasLate4ChristmasDay · 24/07/2023 12:53

No the dogs bark at us whenever they hear us. The other side bark because they're left all day with nothing to do.
Prime example of why some people shouldn't have dogs.

There are definitely people that shouldn't have dogs, or any animal

Notsureofname2 · 24/07/2023 13:49

I visit people in their houses as part of my job, & it makes me so nervous when I get to the front door and I hear a dog barking. I stand away and ask them to put the dog out as I’ve had some jump out as soon as the owner opens the door. Then they’ve occasionally looked miffed when I’ve screamed! Wish dog owners would realise not everyone loves dogs/their dog. It’s a choice to have a dog so be sensible about it.
As for people saying some dogs are better behaved than some toddlers…toddlers don’t go lunging and biting at everyone unlike some dogs. Yes they’ll throw a strop but not capable of killing someone. We’re all humans so maybe show some social skills to a young human?!

This is rude (them not you)

If they are an expected visitor, I usually ask if they are OK with dogs before they come. If they say they're not, I make sure he is out of the way. I am fortunate in that DH can usually take him to work with him for the day.
My dog is a rescue who was abused by a group of men and as a result he hates men. If its a woman, he is fine. So if a man is coming, I make sure the appointment is a day the dog can just not be there.
It's important to be considerate.

nalabae · 24/07/2023 18:12

You only have an issue with dogs because you have a child.
Go to child friendly places which usually ban dogs.
Not every likes children remember that.

What if you want to go somewhere with no children or dogs?

OrwellianTimes · 24/07/2023 18:19

Dog owner, dog lover. I hate it. I want to go into shops and pubs etc. and not get bounced on/slobbered on/fur everywhere.

Expensive restaurants
I never been a restaurant in Mayfair and seen dogs or children thank God

Dibblydoodahdah · 24/07/2023 21:43

I’ve got a very severe allergy to dogs. It’s a nightmare. I used to love shopping but hate it now. The worst thing is I’ve started to see dog friendly offices on job advertisements, which prevents me from applying for some jobs.

lightinthebox · 24/07/2023 21:49

Floralnomad · 30/12/2022 17:42

The problem is not having dog friendly places , the problem is people who have failed to train their dog properly using dog friendly places . If everyone had well behaved dogs nobody would moan .

If only.

Dogs could be perfectly behaved, quiet and with respectful owners and it wouldn’t be enough for some people.

^ This.

Two of those yappy dogs loudly barking at each other (different owners) in the cafe the other day. What a commotion they were causing! I told the owner that I wouldn't be coming back there. The sooner they are banned, the better for everyone.

Sausagenbacon · 25/07/2023 10:02

It's the random yappers that are truly annoying in cafes.
You're enjoying a nice cup of tea and there's a high pitched yap. The owner says 'don't do that' to the dog. Then the same dog does it again. And again. And again. And the owner does f* all, except tell the dog to stop.
And I have had dogs, and like them. I just think some people are so wrapped up in their own little world that they don't care about other people.

I had gone there to get a cup of tea and a bite to eat as I needed to write some birthday cards and notes. I didn't see yappy dog number 1 (a terrier) as the cafe was quite busy and full with people... then in walks a woman with yappy dog number 2 - (some fluffy Pomeranian type thing) and sits down and then all hell breaks loose!

If I'd had a gun, I would have shot both dogs, but I didn't have my glasses with me, as I'd left them in the car.

Of course, neither woman did anything but glare at each other's dogs. Such a dreadful idea which is what I told the cafe owner: It's all going to the dogs!
