To think the magic of Christmas is BS

It's just an excuse to get women to shop more, cook more, clean more, organise more and wait on people hand and foot. If you work, like I do, that suddenly becomes invisible. If you're not well, which I'm not, that's "not Christmasy". If when you've done all the stuff everyone wants while being ill and working as well and you're a bit tired then "it's not magical" or people are "not feeling it".

Just to be clear, I'm talking about adults, not kids.

Also, if you are an adult that enjoys Christmas then good for you.

I've just had it this year with the need to put some perfect experience over a real person to the point where going to bed early or not having as many decorations up as normal has ruined Christmas and seemingly traumatised grown adults.

I'm tired, I've done everything I can. Gifts, work, cleaning, shopping (my tab), decorating, all the food and I have tried to join in the fun but I am shattered. I did the best I could do.

aibu to think that if adult people want a magical Christmas they should shift their arses and help make one? If they don't want an exhausted woman sitting around they could think to themselves, hmmmm, what can I do to make this happen. The magic just means having a servant imo.

Lots of women are married to men who do pull their weight. Dh and I cooked Christmas dinner, kids washed up.

Well I don’t get Christmass, never did. And I like being that way;)

flooddybell · 30/12/2022 11:36

@Tiggal That's great. Genuinely. It's not been my experience this year. That's what my point was.

@simplefree Lol, I think I could have done with something very low key this year. 🍷

This. DH and I spent 4 hours on Christmas Eve prepping food, together. I then cooked the next day (mostly bunging in oven due to prep) whilst DH looked after children/guests. He cleaned up whilst I looked after children/guests. We had both bought and wrapped presents. We decorated the house as a family. Not everyone has a poor division of labour in their house. We enjoy Christmas very much but it’s definitely a joint effort.

@CornflakeKerry Its my opinion and experience posted on a public forum. You don't agree. Fair enough.

I enjoy Christmas too because family are here on and off the whole time. My partner does nothing, I do everything. Its just how it is and always will be. I do not expect anything from him and he never disappoints

So why don't you next year? Keep it as small as you want. If you do everything, you get to choose what actually get done. If they don't like it they're more than welcome to pitch in and add the "magic".

flooddybell · 30/12/2022 11:42

@CornflakeKerry Hahahaha, best laugh I've had all day. Nice one. Happy festive season to you.

Goodness gracious that's never been my experience of Christmas even when I was with my awful ex.

There are plenty of women who don't need to do it all on their own.

I'm sorry that for whatever reason you have to. No wonder you don't like it.

Hbh17 · 30/12/2022 11:44

Then just stop doing it. It's not compulsory to have guests/big meals/decorations etc at Xmas. Why not book a holiday for next year?

flooddybell · 30/12/2022 11:44

@JustAnotherManicNameChange Yes, next year will be different for sure.

I'm so doing this next December.

flooddybell · 30/12/2022 11:46

@DuplicateUserName The thing is before I was unwell I don't think I ever realised how much I did do. This year I can see the distinction. I like @Hbh17 's idea of a trip instead.

Sorry you had a shit time. Completely different here. The magic is still going strong. Oh off to his sister's on the train in the pouring rain to deliver presents as we didn't get a chance yet. I'm staying home drinking wine and eating cheese as it's raining and I don't fancy it. No one forcing you to do stuff. Just say no

Lkydfju · 30/12/2022 11:46

Mine has been like yours OP and I’m fed up; it’s been one big slog and I don’t know how I allowed it to all be on me

flooddybell · 30/12/2022 11:48

@ChangedmynameagainforChristmas I'm glad you enjoy it. I can see why people do.

Well hopefully you'll learn from it and stop.

Do you have a partner? What adults are you talking about in your OP?

SleeplessInEngland · 30/12/2022 11:50

Sorry you have shit partner, op.

kimchifix · 30/12/2022 11:55

Maybe you are grumpy because you are tired and feel like shit. Or maybe you have been hanging out with a man baby/ woman baby for far too long & you've finally woken up. Whatever - you've got 12 months until the next one, which is plenty of time to mix it up and make some changes. I've still got kids at home so it's a different story & DH mucks in. (Wrapped / cooked / slaved). It is hard work but to me worth it. Gratitude goes a long way & it's gratifying for me to see the family happy and together. If any of them had been complaining / bitching or moaning they'd have got short shrift & I'd be thinking a little differently for sure. I think they know which side their bread is buttered - unlike whoever has been whinging in your life & needs a reality check.

flooddybell · 30/12/2022 11:56

@Lkydfju I think it can kind of creep in because you want to make people happy? I'm not doing this again, though.

@ChangedmynameagainforChristmas I'm glad you enjoy it. I can see why people do.

The way I look at it is I get to decide what happens and I choose. He just goes along with everything. I spend my time with my children and grandchildren. I come and go as I please. There are no arguments.
