to be so sensitive to noises

gjkufbb · 29/12/2022 21:02

I think I know that I am being unreasonable, but does anybody else suffer as much as I do when you hear certain sounds.

They make me instantly furious or even want to cry/ get away immediately I hate it so much.

The sounds that bother me the most are:

People scratching
Breathing noises
Water running (especially if somebody's in the shower)
Any sort of low level repetitive hum

I think it's getting worse too. I had a fish tank but the noise of the filter made me so stressed out I had to get rid of it. I don't know what I can do to make myself not get so worked up. Has anyone else got a similar hatred of certain sounds?

Loud noise doesn't bother me at all. It's like subtle repetitive noises I think that bother me the most. I'm considering wearing some sort of ear plugs like loop to help? Has anyone tried them?

I think loop blocks sounds too, so it makes it sound like noise cancelling headphones which put me off, I've not used them though so maybe someone else can advise.

I do have flare audio ear buds which filter certain frequencies and love them for cutting out this type of irritating noise.

CCSS15 · 29/12/2022 21:04

It's called misophonia - my noise issue is people eating and slurping drinks, especially hot drinks

Berlinlover · 29/12/2022 21:05

You have a condition called misophonia. I have it too. Ear plugs are a must staying in hotels for me. I also listen to white noise on my phone if ear plugs aren’t sufficient.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 29/12/2022 21:10

Lots of noises do this for me.

Mostly squeaking noises - polystyrene is the worst
Someone squeaking a finger on a book

NancyJoan · 29/12/2022 21:13

Misophonia. Mine is worse when I’m tired/stressed. Being cooped due to the rain the last few days has really made a difference; I could have throttled my DH and his tuneless whistling earlier today. I went for a walk in the rain instead. When there is no escape, I put AirPods in and listen to audio books.

Bonjovispyjamas · 29/12/2022 21:16

Yep, I have misophonia too, can totally relate.

SantaOnFanta · 29/12/2022 21:17

Yep I suffer too... We had to buy the most expensive boiler on the market as it's super quiet. Fridge noise is horrid. I hate humming noises.

We also had to get rid of fish as the filter noise was too much!!

I can't drive my brand new car due to some of the noise characteristics.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 29/12/2022 21:18

I find Flare Calmer pro are better than loops. With loops I can hear my own breathing super amplified.

AmazonPrim · 29/12/2022 21:19

I'm like this although I feel like it's only really presented itself in the past 5 years. I cannot stand the sound of the bathroom fan. My husband and son leave it on and when I flip the light switch it automatically comes on and it fills me with rage. I also can't stand clicking noises or my children's squealing and squabbling. I tried the Flare ear plugs but I found they did nothing for me. I just use regular foam ear plugs from Boots now and I can hear most things, but sounds are just duller.

I have read that I also have something called auditory processing disorder where my ears pick up all the little background sounds and focus on them - things like the hood fan, the tap running, the fish tank filter, the dryer etc. My ears focus on that so when my husband talks to me it doesn't register because my ears are focusing on all the little sounds. He gets furious with me but I can't help it 🫤

I also have adhd (diagnosed) and possibly asd which I've been told could also be the reason for the above issues

ApexPredator · 29/12/2022 21:20

I have developed misophonia and it has got much worse over the last couple of years.

I can’t stand a clock that audibly ticks; I’ve had to take the batteries out of one in the bedroom when I’ve been staying with relatives (I did put them back in when I left!) I hate the sound of a car engine idling; tinny music leaking from ear plugs; TV in the next room and when people play music in a nearby garden.

I don’t mind human bodily noises, which I understand are far more common as a trigger. A ticking clock or any regular noise makes me feel really anxious though

Stressedmum2017 · 29/12/2022 21:21

I think it's fairly normal to have these quirks. I can't stand bumps and bangs. If the kids are playing in the room above me it puts me on edge and makes me irritated the entire time.

ApexPredator · 29/12/2022 21:22

@SantaOnFanta we’ve recently had to make a lot of adjustments and one is silent fans in the bathrooms. And yes of course it is more expensive Angry There’s no way I could have fish; I really hate even the bubbling

Ellx · 29/12/2022 21:26

Yes! When people have a dry mouth and they make a “clacking” sound with their lips because their mouth is so dry.
I have had so many arguments with my family over this- it actually makes me furious and i know I’m being unreasonable but it triggers me in a way nothing else can.
also when people have a blocked nose and constantly sniff!!! I’m getting angry just thinking about it.

RavenclawsPrincess · 29/12/2022 21:26

Autistic and have misophonia. It’s much worse when stressed/anxious/tired. Loop earplugs help, or noise cancelling headphones. Having music/radio/TV on while eating.

Mine developed after I had a bad inner ear infection and I got tinnitus after that, I don’t know if there’s been any trigger like that for you OP?

Friarclose · 29/12/2022 21:29

Misophonia!!

I am the same except chewing doesn't bother me, for me it's things like babies crying, dogs barking and whining, anything like that. Probably makes me come across as a twat sometimes!!

Ear plug are the way forward I think , I can't use them as I also have tinnitus however I have these things called Flare, they're like earplugs with a hole in, think they're designed to take the edge off noises that bother. They're 20 quid I think. Google, they might help.

janeeyreair · 29/12/2022 21:31

I can't stand whispering, on Tv and in real life. Absolutely makes me cringe and gives me instant rage.

gjkufbb · 29/12/2022 21:32

Thanks everyone. I've just been looking into flare audio calmer ear plugs.

My mum always said she suspected I was on the spectrum when I was younger as I displayed a lot of traits. However I've never been diagnosed.

DH just doesn't understand how upset I get and I often snap at him for making certain sounds and he has no idea why I get so angry.

BakedTattie · 29/12/2022 21:32

I get this. The sound of people eating, or people breathing. I get so so angry, it almost makes me feel sick. Everything dulls in comparison to it, it’s all I can focus on and hear. It’s awful,

FabbyDab · 29/12/2022 21:37

I have a slightly different thing, not sure if it's misophonia, due to asd/adhd (I haven't been diagnosed, but lots in my family), or is totally normal.

But I HATE clashing sounds. Not too bothered by background sounds like PPs are, it's more than one "foreground" sounds that does it for me.

Things like the kids talking over each other, or someone talking to me while I'm listening to the radio. Anything that forces me to focus on two noises at once makes me want to scream. I have to make it stop.

Any insights?

katseyes7 · 29/12/2022 21:37

It's the constant thud of a football for me.
I dread the school holidays. I live on an estate where the kids are nearly all boys, from about 8 - 12. And they're all in junior football teams.
There's a big green across the road from my house, and l honestly don't mind them playing football, or shouting. That's what kids do.
What actually gets on every nerve l have is when they're standing talking and one of them's bouncing the ball. Thud thud thud thud, over and over.
I'm even planning to move to sheltered accommodation in a couple of years when l retire, in the hope l might get away from it.
I have three boys next door to me (4-12) and they're lovely, pleasant, polite, well mannered lads. I don't mind them playing on their trampoline, scooters, bikes, etc, or running up and down.
But the football thing actually makes me really anxious. I can't wait to move.

I cannot stand a radio on during breakfast if I want to talk to people. My dh also sits with YouTube game walk through chattering away whilst the TV is on and I have to leave the room. The clash of two sounds is unbearable.

SantaOnFanta · 29/12/2022 21:47

Also can't stand TV programmes with music playing in the background over people talking!!!!

Youcanlaugh · 29/12/2022 21:49

Yep, it’s misophonia. My 12 year old daughter has had it for about a year… the noises trigger the fight or flight response (it’s something to do with the vagus nerve in brain - similar to how seeing blood or feeling pain may cause a person to faint). She either gets really angry, or wants to burst out crying and just wants to get out of the room. If there are other noises covering up the sounds she’s okay but she can’t stand them in a quiet room. It’s often linked to neuro-diversity too.

AllTheAll · 29/12/2022 21:54

Hood fan for me. I need to put on noise canceling headphones when I cook sometimes.

People snarfling up snot and dripping noses just ends it for me.

Maybe need some anti-anxiety help? And of course all the great suggestions here on noise blocking.

HaggisWurst · 29/12/2022 21:55

Yes, some noises make me feel ridiculously angry.
Clapping
Whistling
Dogs barking
Kids screeching
Neighbours banging (like cooking or furniture building.. normal stuff)
People chewing

I must looked like a right moody cow when I react to them. It wasn't until my mum suggested I might actually have a condition that I realised it could be explained and not me just being a miserable git
