To not get out best china for PIL

A few weeks back MIL and DIL came over for tea and biscuits, our usual tea plates were in the dish washer so we had to use our best ones. DIL stuck his chewing gum on his, he knew it was our best china as we’ve got it out at special occasions he’s been at. AIBU to not get it out again for them?

Who is the male dil? I can’t work it out.

either way it’s disgusting

Burgoo · 29/12/2022 14:07

Unless its some ancient antique that is worth millions I don't see the problem. I never understood people ranking their inanimate objects as "best" and "everyday"

Queenofthebrae · 29/12/2022 14:07

That is disgusting. Best china or not that is disrespectful. Who was expected to pick that off the plate?

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 29/12/2022 14:07

Dad in law?

even if it was a chipped and faded plate, that’s gross. I would have directed him to the bin.

Handbagsandgladrags81 · 29/12/2022 14:08

Dad-in-law?

Gross

Stick to paper plates

purplecorkheart · 29/12/2022 14:09

Your DIL is vile.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/12/2022 14:20

Was he saving it for later? 😭

ZekeZeke · 29/12/2022 14:22

Doesn't matter if it was a mug or the best China.
That's gross of him.

5foot5 · 29/12/2022 14:26

Even if that was done on ordinary everyday plates that is pretty disgusting.

Who is DIL in this context. Normally interpreted as daughter-in-law.

Harcar · 29/12/2022 14:26

Yes, Dad in law. Most people I know would put it in their pocket or the bin. Clearly DH or myself was expected to pick it off. One of us should have asked us politely to put it in the bin.

100% with you OP, unacceptable behaviour.

LaMarschallin · 29/12/2022 14:37

I think whether it's the best china or not is immaterial, it's just bad manners to stick chewing gum to a plate rather than put it in the bin.
Perhaps next time, along whichever kind of china you put out, you could pointedly give him a bit of toilet paper to wrap the wad in.

WednesdaysMentor · 29/12/2022 15:01

I hate chewing gum it makes me gag, if they had done that to me i would have told him straight to stop being so disgusting and put it in the bin. My hate for chewing gum outweighs my politeness.

AcrossthePond55 · 29/12/2022 18:46

I wouldn't care if it was Limoges porcelain or if it was paper plates, putting 'used' chewing gum where other people have to look at it is just plain gross. And to have to pick it off a plate? Boak. My best china (it was my Nan's, so it's around 100 years old) has to be hand washed and I'd be afraid the gum would pull off some of the gold edging.

No, I wouldn't get it out for him again. If I absolutely HAD to, I'd ostentatiously hand him a tissue and say loudly "This is for your gum, FiL so you don't put it on my nice dishes like you did last time".

Allinadayswork80 · 29/12/2022 18:49

Ew gross! YANBU!

Cherrysoup · 29/12/2022 19:08

Why didn’t you tell him to bin it? That’s just shit behaviour.
