To be annoyed at being back to work

I'm back to the office today. There's literally nothing to do. Anything I do needs to be signed off and that person is off until next week.

Really I am only here as not everyone can be off at once.

Anyone else that's in as far as I can see are doing nothing too though I'm the only person in all day in our area of the office so its quiet and time is dragging. Wfh not an option despite little to be at.

AIBU to think if there's little work to do, workplaces should just close for the main holiday period and not bring people in for the sake of it? At least if i worked in retail again the day would fly

You are being paid to be there though. Would you be happy to have to use some of your annual leave to cover this period? Or have it unpaid?

Tirediam · 29/12/2022 10:17

I agree they should close if no one in and nothing can be done.
however I can’t wait to have my office day tomorrow, I need to get out of the house, even if I’m the only one in the office. I’ll do a clean up or something 🔥

I don't want to use some of my holiday allocation this week. I want it for other times. I am glad I have the option.

If offices are closed, often the time off comes out of annual holiday entitlement.

It does not apply to me, but for people in bad domestic situations, or who do not celebrate Christmas in a large way, being back at work may be a blessing.

I haven't really got any work to do this week. I have a meeting in an hour and that's pretty much it. I prefer working this period because it's quiet. I'd be pissed off if I had to take leave because of a company shut down.

Hamtoastie · 29/12/2022 10:48

I know I'm being paid to be there, but I have the leave there to use and would rather use it. Do appreciate though that some people don't want to use it or have difficult home lives where they want out of the house.

Do you have any calls to make or online chat things to do? Like get a better deal for your Sky, AA etc because it's approaching the end?

The kind of calls with automated systems you have to shout at and don't normally get the chance to call from an office!

See if you can save yourself some money to have a better day off in exchange for this one!

Agree! Have this same moan every year - my company remains open all year except bank hols and in my team we're never allowed all of xmas off (due to nature of our work), so usually just pick max of 2 days to take as leave. It's ridiculous though as 99% of the time there's not enough work to do between xmas and NY anyway. I am in the same position, whereby I can progress my own tasks but require sign-off or input from other colleagues across the company who are off for the whole xmas period... which makes me being here pretty pointless.

Yes I'm being paid. But I have so much A/L left to take before end of financial year and I'd be happier to take it and actually have a decent break over xmas and enjoy spending some time with the kids!
