We bought gifts for DB & SIL (something I know they wanted & not cheap), money to DN & vouchers to DSis & BIL.

Had 35 people round for meal Boxing Day, huge amounts of work & expense, especially after having hosted Christmas.

out of all of this I’ve had one text of thanks from someone who attended Boxing Day. Is it too much just to expect a message of thanks from others, whether for the gifts or the meal?

not sure if I’m expecting too much, but it makes it all feel v unappreciated.

It's absolutely not too much - they're appallingly rude.

I'm willing to bet that you're the kind of person that's always offering to host, always being thoughtful.

Well, now you stop. Next year, buy gifts for those who appreciate them, and host people you enjoy spending time with

(And wow, 35 people! I feel faint at the thought!)

Thanks, you’re right. I always overthink (& probably overspend) on presents, always do the hosting. I enjoy the thought of it and enjoy buying gifts I think others will like, but the lack of thanks or appreciation always leaves a bad taste 😔
