To think it is rude to constantly ask questions about money

Over the break we visited an in law for tea/ catch up. Don't see them much as they are in another city 5 hours drive away.

The whole time they asked DH, DC and me a series of questions about how much money we earned, how we could afford things and our future earning capacity.

For context they earn a lot more than we do, have much lower expenses (only one grown up DC) and live in a much less expensive city. Their conversation is always about money. How much they are saving for their pension, how much tax they have to pay etc etc. Am I alone I'm thinking asking people questions about their income is rude or am I just out of touch?

FWIW we answered in a very generic way or just avoided answering at all.

Yes, it’s rude. SIL does this, and also talks non-stop about how much money all of her friends have. I think she thinks it’s a power move to make sure we know our place in the family pecking order (they have a lot more than we do), but it just comes across as shallow and materialistic.

You're probably right. SIL can't get her head around how we can afford life with x4 DC. Truth is we don't care about buying new things whereas that is her hobby.
