Is this strep a? Conflicting advice

So both my dc are poorly. The baby more so. Red inflamed puffy eyes, lethargic, crying runny nose etc. Dr saw him and suggest I take him to a and e.

Took my 2 year old too as he also has inflamed eyes and had a fever for 2 days, snot etc but better in himself.

Dr assessed both and said 2 year old needs antibiotics due to white pus seen on tonsils. Which would indicate bacterial tonsillitis. Nothing prescribed for baby. Asked if it was strep a they said no.

Got home and goggled symptoms, fever, tonsillitis, scabs on face (he has a few which I thought were from dried snot) and its saying strep throat/strep a?

Anyone's little one have this and we're the symptoms similar? Worried and don't understand why they would prescribe antibiotics if not concerned thank you

They don't know if it's strep a without testing but the antibiotics will work for strep a as well as bacterial tonsillitis.

Snot, runny nose, head cold symptoms etc. all suggest viral respiratory illness, with inflamed tonsils suggests a secondary bacterial tonsillitis. Strep A/IGAS presents slightly differently AFAIK. My DD had scarlet fever/strep in 2017 and her symptoms were: very high temperature, headache, sore throat, joint pains in her arms and legs, then up came a raised sandpaper rash across her abdomen and back. She didn’t have any head cold symptoms like runny nose, snot, sneezing, watery eyes etc.

But hopefully one of the MN drs will be along to post soon. It doesn’t sound like you should worry.

I think its common in 4-8 Yr olds but strep type illnesses are v common. It's the complications and immune system unasked to handle the virus that's leading to more serious cases (still very rare). I would make another appointment with GP in the morning though just for your littlest one and request antibiotics if possible x

*unable not unasked!

@Lexi868 you think baby should take them as a precautionary too?

It may not be necessary if they examine baby and give a second opinion but since they are more lax with antibiotics at the moment due to Strep A complications and concerns, it may be worth just mentioning that your 2 Yr old is on them and would it be a good idea for baby to be on them as well? Either way, you will get another check up and they will be able to update on latest advice.
I will say though that even with the symptoms, please domt panic. They assessed your littlest one as well on A & E and it is very rare for complications. If they were worried they would have prescribed there and then for baby too.
But just for some peace of mind, the GP will be able to look over bubs again, even just for your reassurance.
X

Thanks.
Ffs my dh picked up the Co amoxiclav and left it in a bag in the hallway. We got home about 7pm and kids went straight to bed as tired and was going to start the antibiotics as soon as he woke up. Just realised they need to be kept in fridge!!!!
Do you think I should request a new bottle tmrw with doctor? Not sure about how strict the storage needs to be it's been 8 hrs out of fridge 😭

Should be ok if you put in the fridge now- weather is quite cold and it's been in his bag so it's a cool, dry place.
Run it past GP tomorrow as well but it won't cause any harm to start him on them in the morning in any event. It's normally to do with the effectiveness of the medication depending on how they are kept, ie potency of it.
The little ones must be exhausted! Bless them x
