Currently broken down, middle of nowhere on a back lane.
Took me over half an hour to get through and then they said they would text me an ETA.
270 MINUTES!
I called back and waited again they said yes atleast that long.
Aibu to think this is ridiculous service!
Or is this normally how long it takes? Never had to call breakdown before so is this the norm?

Agree it probably depends on area, time of year etc. The two times I've needed to call RAC and AA out they have both arrived within about 30 minutes.

They came to me and my dad (who has cancer & I told them this) in just over an hour on the M25 a couple of months ago. Brilliant service.

I had broken down on the way home from picking my son up ill from his special school. They made me a priority and got someone to me in about an hour but his truck was broken so he couldn't tow me. It was a further seven hours before they eventually towed the car. My husband came and got us and they called half an hr before the tow vehicle was estimated to get to my car. He had come from another city about 50 miles away. I had varied conversations with the call centre staff. One was amazing and offered to get a taxi to get me and my son home (didn't take them up as not practical with my son) another was the worst customer service I have ever known.

They are fucking useless in my experience. Had a flat tyre on my mums car. Its the sort that doesn't have a spare. This was at 5.30pm on a Sunday . 3 hrs later, they said it would be at least another 3. I ended up leaving the car and getting a taxi home 30 miles. Started again the following morning.
I had key cover, ideal when dh lost his key. Car was on the driveway. They simply had no means of solving the problem. I ended up finding and paying an auto locksmith myself and recovering the coat later.

I logged a breakdown at 7.45am and they were there 8.30am.

I’ve only needed them once in recent years. Our cover was through our bank account, I was safe at an Airbnb but I had scraped the bottom of my car on a big pothole coming down a hill and there was something dripping from underneath the car.

They were with me within an hour and diagnosed that it was a normal drip, something to do with aircon. He advised me to get it checked out in a garage with ramps the next day just in case but it turns out that he was right.

I was very impressed. Having read the bank cover it turns out if it was a bad problem it didn’t cover towing me home so I’ve got cover now with start which does, but I’ve not had to use that yet.

I had a bad experience with RAC this time last year. I was in a vulnerable situation and a Highways Agency guy ended up stopping and stayed with me until help arrived. When it did it was a local contractor.

I don’t see the point of paying the premium price for the RAC if they’re just going to phone around and find a recovery service nearby. That’s the same service offered by the much cheaper breakdown companies so I’ve now gone with StartRescue.
