Violashift · 28/12/2022 19:00

With Christmas asnd our gas cost I usually spend £500 on food but with the cold snap keeping the house at 17 degrees cost ovet £200.

Is it possible to survive in £200 until January 31st

Sorry but this sounds very much like a begging thread

Overthebow · 28/12/2022 19:01

Is the £200 just for food? And how many people?

AtTheNursingHome · 28/12/2022 19:02

well if that’s all there is you’ll have to 🤷🏻‍♀️

WeDontNeedToTalkAboutJamie · 28/12/2022 19:02

Depends what you need to pay for over the month/ how many people in your house.

Dacadactyl · 28/12/2022 19:02

What does the 200 need to finance?

Food for how many? Petrol/travel?

If just food for 4 then it can be done. Petrol added in and you will struggle so you might need a food bank referral.

MichelleScarn · 28/12/2022 19:02

£200 for 3 days of food?

nancydroo · 28/12/2022 19:03

You'd have to be mega strict. Pasta frozen veg and noodles with saver tinned veg and glasses of tap water.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 28/12/2022 19:03

To cover food and travel? Yes.

rattlemehearties · 28/12/2022 19:03

You can ask the council for fuel top up vouchers and Food Bank vouchers. I think £200 to last until end of January is not enough.

Beautifulsunflowers · 28/12/2022 19:04

yes If that’s just for food you can. How many of you?
you need to use up what’s in the freezer, make the most of your store cupboard items and plan easy cheap meals.

There are a few more days than that between now and 31st Jan

Until the end of January

America12 · 28/12/2022 19:05

How many of you ? What does it have to include ?

Scottishskifun · 28/12/2022 19:06

Possibly do an inventory of your food cupboards, fridge and freezer. Meal plan and only buy the bare essentials of bread, milk etc. Use apps for free food or community food points (different from food banks they reduce food waste) and shop smartly.
It will be very tight and it depends on how your energy is done on a prepayment meter it will be very difficult if your on DD don't worry too much it averages out and it's OK to go into debit on a bit in Winter.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 28/12/2022 19:08

You'll need rice, pasta, a sack of potatoes, milk, cheese, flour and butter, plus something like cabbage/carrots/peas and something like pork joints, which are very cheap for the amount of meat they provide. But it's doable.

Hello everyone
We've had a couple of reports from people concerned about this thread so, as we usually do in these circs, we're putting our heads round the door with some important reminders.

Right now we can't see any evidence to indicate that the OP isn't above board – if we did, we'd remove the thread straight away. But the truth is that, sadly, we at MNHQ can't know with 100% certainty that any poster is genuine, no matter who they are or how long they have been here. As frustrating as it is, we're not able to vouch for anyone here.

So we always ask users to remember that not everyone on the internet is who they say they are – and remind folk not to give more to another poster, either financially (in cash or gifts) or emotionally (in time or care and support) than they'd be prepared to lose if things went wrong. We strongly advise against parting with any cash or giving away your personal details, and if you receive a PM which makes you uneasy - report it to us and we’ll take a look.

Sorry to hijack your thread briefly there, OP – we hope it all works out okay for you.

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 28/12/2022 19:09

Depends how many of you there are and what ages. 45-odd quid a week is pushing it for food for a family but if you run down the larder/freezer, assuming you've got some, and raid any Nectar/Boots points etc (and perhaps use a credit card carefully to shift the last shop of eg month into February) then it should be manageable.

nancydroo · 28/12/2022 19:10

Take the cash out off the bank so you can feel the money go and write down when you spend money. Perhaps split it into four envelopes and give 3 to a family member so once your £50 is gone one week you spend no more until the second week starts and you get the 2nd envelope. Means you can ensure you will have money in the last week

MintJulia · 28/12/2022 19:17

34 days on £200. is £5.88 per day on food. For how many people?

Our budget is £6 per day for two, and I manage that with plenty of fresh fruit & veg, fish, meat, cheese. I could make it stretch to three people if necessary.

Devilledmeg · 28/12/2022 19:43

Do a First Direct bank switch and make £175

Violashift · 28/12/2022 23:32

Sorry its 2 adults and a teen.

Well a budget of around £6 a day is going to be very difficult to work towards. My minimum budget is around £9-10 a day (family of 3 - but hungry teenager and sports mad DH....). I would do a list of any resources you have - food in the cupboards already, or any points on any reward cards you could cash in? Do you have any small amounts of money in random savings accounts? Have you included the £67 you get towards the bill?

Go onto moneysaving expert and look at earn £10 a days threads, look at things you can sell online. Just do what you can to get by. Maybe look at food banks in your area if you need to use that then do so? I have a budget of £350 till 26th Jan and will be watching every penny (My MOT was much higher than expected!).

Is food all you have to worry about? Are your bills and petrol/transport costs covered?

ConsuelaHammock · 29/12/2022 01:43

Turn your heating off and heat only one room? I couldn’t survive on £200. If I didn’t have any money I’d have to secure a temporary overdraft or sell something .

ConsuelaHammock · 29/12/2022 01:48

Buy a large sack of potatoes if you can . The half hundred weight bags are good value for money and should last ages. Champ, baked potatoes, chips etc can be the basis for most meals for a few weeks
