AIBU To Think Joey Maynard (Of Chalet School Fame) Was Insufferable

TheShellBeach · 28/12/2022 17:11

.............with her eleven children, infuriating husband and bizarre tendency to move house (and country) to live next door to the school her sister inexplicably started when Joey was a child.

She also managed to write (at least) two books a year, have a series of multiple pregnancies and poke her nose into the Chalet School's business on a daily basis.

I mean, you'd happily set Len on fire to brighten up a dull evening wouldn't you? Bonus points if you get Mary Lou in the same conflagration. She is so very very tedious. Joey is - as someone said upthread - nosy and boisterous and insufferable but wildly fun to be around I expect. And kind. OOAOML is so boring, despite the author's best attempts to give her some pizazz.

Not only that, but Grizel is always depicted as "not musical" although she becomes the CS music mistress eventually.

I do know that she would have preferred to be a games mistress, but even so, you'd think that her musical abilities would be demonstrable when she was a pupil.

I love Grizel because she set Len Maynard on fire. Or was it Con?

Grizel wasn’t musical in the same way as Margia.
I think EBD was just using Grizel as an example of how superior the teaching was at the CS - that even though Grizel wasn’t naturally musical she was taught well enough that she could be a teacher

Agree.

Grizel’s an example of someone who, despite having no love of music, has become technically competent through having plenty of practice enforced by her father and stepmother.

And she’s then become a music teacher, because that’s an obvious career choice for someone who’s a competent musician and who’s only further education / training has been based around studying music.

In the same way that Nancy Wilmot, who hated maths, was taught well enough to become a maths teacher.

How do these forums & FB pages & whatever explain EBD constantly confusing Matron Lloyd & Matron Gould?

It's called an EBDism and people laugh about it.

I've just finished Exploits where they have the Staff Evening - has that happened before?
There was something else which was described as happening regularly but had never happened before.

Also what about the pets? Someone is appointed as pets prefect but the pets are not mentioned again.

Pets get a mention at the start of Lintons in the opening assembly. Nothing more about them yet and no mention of them when the chalet is shut for half term.

Yugi · 31/12/2022 18:54

Pets get mentioned in one of the later books. Someone suggests letting girls have pets again and is turned down because of the issues they had rehoming dogs that couldn’t go back because of quarantine. Which suggests that it was seen as ok for girls to have pets and then just abandon them!!

No!
Abandoning their pets?
I cannot see a Chalet Girl doing this.

After all, Jack Lambert, who was a complete bitch in every possible way, managed to climb out of a window in the ice and snow to rescue Minette the cat.

If Jack Lambert can rescue a cat I can't see the rest of the CS girls leaving their pets behind at half term to fend for themselves.

I bet that at half term the boy of all work would be expected to look after the pets.

There’s a conversation about careers in The Chalet School Goes To It. Someone wants to be a gardener, a couple want to be nurses & there’s even one who wants to be a surgeon. It feels very bittersweet when you know that if they get married, that will be it for them.

StitchesInTime · 31/12/2022 20:07

The whole pets thing is crazy.

What sane boarding school encourages pupils to bring along pets, especially when many of the pupils are travelling from another country? It’s completely nuts. And you just know that some parents would be happy to blame the school if anything happened to the pet during term time, even if the pet in question was a 3 year old hamster.

Probably the SLT knocked the whole pets thing on the head once they’d realised what a nightmare it was to organise looking after and repatriating a bunch of random animals.

Ha! I am trying to formulate an AIBU on those lines.

Help me out, somebody.

What, like, “AIBU to sue my DD’s school because they let DD’s beloved pet die while in their care”?

With a drip feed later on admitting that the pet in question was extremely elderly and suffering from some sort of often fatal health condition?

TheShellBeach · 31/12/2022 20:59

"DD's pet hamster cruelly abandoned in the Tirol. AIBU to blame the bonkers matron of her bonkers school for not reminding her to pack him?"

"AIBU to think an expensive foreign school should be capable or reminding pupils to pack their hamsters when they go home for the hols? WWYD?"

"AIBU. DD's hamster found on the Autobahn"

I was going to make that "AIBU. DD's hamster found squashed flat on the Autobahn" but I thought it was too gruesome.

It's like this, on the right. I've got a better shot of it but not on my phone (yes, I went all the way there to see how they had to walk over the mountain)

AIBU to think an expensive school should be able to take care of a sick hamster?
School matron gave him rich creamy milk and a "dose" and he has not moved much since.

I actually had my photo taken by (what I think was) the Dripping Rock! Sadly it was on my ex's camera so don't think I've got it anywhere now.
