A relative knows I love the 'Slow Horses' TV dramas based on the books by Mick Herron, and has bought me 'Real Tigers' which is no. 3 in the series. The TV season based on book 2 is finishing at the moment. I have just heard that the series has been renewed for seasons 3 and 4. AIBU to think that If I read the book (which I'm dying to do!) it might spoil the TV show when it comes out? I don't think so, I could watch Gary Oldman act the London phone directory and enjoy it.

I always prefer to read the book before watching a television adaptation, so I think that you’re being U to think reading the book will spoil the series.

Geepee71 · 28/12/2022 15:09

I'd read the book first, you will create your own version of the characters and also know if the adaptation excludes any key parts.

Keyansier · 28/12/2022 15:11

Yes, what the other poster said. And your way makes no sense anyway, because the adaptations are based on the books. It's like not reading the last Harry Potter book when it was released in 2007 because the film didn't come out until 2011 and it would ruin it!

SaintLoy · 28/12/2022 15:16

When I said 'ruin' I suppose I meant it would be like reading a great big 'spoiler' for the series (bc I'd know 'what happens'), but I think the comments so far have clarified that it wouldn't be quite like that.

I've read all the Slow Horses books and I still enjoyed the TV series. Be prepared for Jackson Lamb to be a bit different though Grin

I needn't have worried. Of course, as I already knew, Literature and TV/cinema are different media. Herron is very good on characters' thoughts and inner reflections and perceptions. I have to say my mental image of Lamb-in-the-book is a good deal 'posher' than Gary Oldman's portrayal.
