to pay £500 for an oil filter change & inspection?

I have had an old Polo for years which didn't cost much to run. Recently got a small Audi a year or so back and due my first oil change, is this the kind of price people are happy to pay? Just seems a little much to me..

So this is a first service on a new vehicle?

Does sounds expensive. Genuine audi parts will cost more though, what kind of garage are you using?

Singlebutmarried · 28/12/2022 12:48

Age of Audi?

Regular oil or the Haldex oil?

Modern cars are bastard to work on as it’s nigh on impossible to access anything in the engine bay these days.

GasPanic · 28/12/2022 12:49

If this was done at the dealers I can believe it is the sort of price you might pay.

For a new car they have you by the short and curlies. You have to get it serviced there to keep it in warranty.

If you are into low cost motoring German cars are the worst way to go because a) they are expensive to buy, service and repair and b) they are not very reliable, despite manufacturers claims.

If you go for "status" brands like Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar etc expect to get rinsed at the dealers.

BungleandGeorge · 28/12/2022 12:51

Don’t go to the dealer, look for an independent who use genuine Audi parts. It will be half the price. It’s literally just an oil and filter change will take them less than an hour…

BungleandGeorge · 28/12/2022 12:54

btw you don’t have to use the dealer to keep your warranty anymore. Look specifically for a garbage that offers genuine manufacturers parts, if they do this they usually advertise that it will preserve your warranty. There’s a lot of people who want to look around when they find out it’s £500! You may also be able to bargain with the dealer who can usually find ‘special offers’ or go for a service pack. It’s still considerably more expensive though

GasPanic · 28/12/2022 12:55

@BungleandGeorge

I didn't know that. Thanks for the info.

givethistokevin · 28/12/2022 12:57

Is this a dealer service or an Indy changing oil?

Very different

reenon · 28/12/2022 12:59

I run a VW / Audi specialist workshop... We'd charge approx £170+VAT for this service... £500 is inane.

StrawberryWater · 28/12/2022 13:01

That’s a crazy price.

Shop around. Think I paid £165 for my last one.

gogohmm · 28/12/2022 13:19

I pay £150 plus vat for a service. £500 is ridiculous

Hopeyoursproutsarealreadyon · 28/12/2022 13:22

Dh does mine for 20 quid!

KrisAkabusi · 28/12/2022 13:23

No. My main dealer charges £180 for an oil change service. Go somewhere else. You can no longer be forced to use dealers to maintain a warranty

twg · 28/12/2022 13:36

thanks everyone for replies. how much would you expect to pay for a first oil and filter change, inspection and pollen filter?
what about for a change of all 4 tyres?

the price quoted was from audi (not including tyres)

Is it an A1? They use a lot of oil and it is an expensive oil I found out recently. Also, engine oil prices have shot up massively. But I would get a price from a VAT registered reputable German specialist based on recommendations. Make sure they have the ability to register the service on Erwin which is the VAG groups online service record. That does sound expensive.

Badleg87 · 28/12/2022 14:19

Tyre prices vary massively, but easily £100 a tyre

For what you've mentioned above, x2 filters, oil and labour I'd hope to pay £250/300

GladAllOver · 28/12/2022 14:24

The Audi engine is identical to the VW one of the same size, so the parts cost should be the same. I pay half that price for my Golf, a larger car.

SpeckledlyHen · 28/12/2022 14:30

As others have said don’t go to the dealer, it will cost a fortune. You can get an independent garage to do it with genuine parts and still stay in warranty.

SpeckledlyHen · 28/12/2022 14:32

also for tyres you can find the size and make on your tyres and google how much they will be. You don’t need to go high range (Michelin for example). Hankook are often cheaper. There’s an online tyre place you can order and pay for tyres and get them fitted at a garage.

SpeckledlyHen · 28/12/2022 14:33

Black circles is the online tyre place

I tend to change suppliers depending on price but have used Halfords run, Tyres on the Drive for the last few times. They've been cheaper than BlackCircles for me (although they're usually very good) and the bonus is that they come to your house to fit them.

Trouble with Audi is they're the most expensive of the German manufacturers (bar Porsche). I've had a few BMWs in the past and that would usually be about £200-300 but have previously had service packs, which works out cheaper.

£500 is taking the Michael.

Lonelycrab · 28/12/2022 14:57

Just did all 4 tyres on my car at Kwik-fit. They came in cheaper than black circles and the local independents, they also let me haggle them down a bit. I got I think 15% off as I was buying 4.

Ageee that £500 for an oil and filter change is bonkers.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 28/12/2022 17:25

Please don't put the cheapest tyres you can buy on a presumably 1-2 year old Audi. I would avoid Asda tyres, abysmal service. I've found Tyres on The Drive the best for service and decent prices. Look at the ones available and go somewhere in the middle is usually my advice, unless you're talking a performance Audi like an RS5/4/3 or similar, in which case go for top end. They're more expensive for a good reason. I work in the motor industry, but this is just my opinion.
