Omeprazole and drowsiness?

Not so much of an AIBU, I'm shamelessly posting for traffic - sorry.
DS is 10wks old and has silent reflux. After a failed trial on Gaviscon he has been taking Omeprazole for this past week. I have noticed a reduction in some of his symptoms already, he no longer hiccups after every feed, doesn't have little mouthfuls of acid coming up his throat so frequently and can tolerate being laid back for nappy changes etc for longer periods.
My concern is, he has become very sleepy. He has gone from a baby that took no naps through the day, from 4 weeks old, to now having naps at every feed and appearing to be in a very deep sleep. He continues to wake for every feed but sometimes these are short and drowsy. Still having regular wet and dirty nappies. He does have a very awake period however this tends to be from around 10pm until 2am, he then cluster feeds until 4am although these last two hours are sleepy feeding.

I'm hoping some of you can share your experiences with Omeprazole? Has anyone else found this is a side effect and if so, did it pass when LO got used to it?
YABU - It is essentially drugging DS or
YANBU - It is simply "settling" his symptoms and allowing him to sleep peacefully for a change
(Doctor says Omeprazole does not cause drowsiness)

I've no medical qualification but I have suffered with GORD for as long as I can remember. Without my medication I can't sleep due to the discomfort of reflux/excess stomach acid. My money would be on his symptoms improving and his increased comfort is allowing him to sleep versus the medication making him drowsy

Yes, this absolutely. Now he's more comfortable he can take the sleep he needs.

Thank you for your reply. I'm hoping this is the case, it's just hard not to worry - especially as a first time mum lol

Thank you! Is it normal for a 10wk old to sleep through the night? He went down to sleep tonight at 1.30am and hasn't woke for his usual 5.30/6.00 feed... Hence me driving myself crazy and posting on here😅

None of my babies have had no day time naps until they were maybe 2 or 3 years old. At your baby's age they were sleeping all the time. I agree it's a sign the medicine is working well and letting him sleep properly.

I know it's not the same as omeprazole but, my 3 month old daughter has been suffering with trapped wind, really fussy after feeds and would take a while to settle down after, as soon as I started giving her infacol she settled straight away and the first night she slept for nearly 5 hours without waking!
So I think like other posters have said it's probably because he's not in any discomfort from the acid reflux anymore, if in doubt though ring your local pharmacy and they may be able to help with any questions 😊

My daughter had silent reflux as a baby which we eventually established was a milk allergy. I really feel for you! It took a long time for us to establish that she had silent reflux so we went through many months of wondering what was wrong. I would imagine your ds has started feeling more comfortable, allowing more sleep. I don’t remember any significant side effects from Omeprazole but my kids are now 9 so some time ago. My advice would be to push to see if there is a cause for the reflux👍

@NeedMoMoney @earlydoors42 thank you both for your replies, it's good to get some reassurance or even just feel like I'm talking to someone outside of my own head lol.

@Elli123 thank you! It's definitely not easy and the sleep deprivation has definitely left me pretty highly strung lol. How would I go about finding out cause? I have eliminated majority of dairy from my diet but need to pay more attention to the "hidden" dairy in things. It has helped to settle his otherwise upset tummy. He also has a "slight" tongue tie but the paediatrician said there is no link between this and reflux?

I don't think a 4 week old not sleeping in the day at all is normal. Sounds like he's just ableto get the sleep he needs now.

One of the side effects of osemprazol
is that it can deplete magnesium levels, causing tiredness. A commonly know side effect

Hi, my wee one developed eczema too so they started to suspect an allergy. She did get allergy tests which showed milk intolerance although it was difficult to establish if it was lactose or protein. Eliminated all dairy and had special milk. Took around six weeks to properly settle. Glad to say she grew out of it by 2/3 with macaroni cheese & pizza favourite foods. She now is a really fussy eater which I wonder if it’s related to discomfort/ negative association with food early in. I’d push to be referred to consultant, made a huge difference when we saw a specialist.
