To Hate New Years Eve / Day

No I don't feel any joy when the clock strikes midnight.
I just wanna contuine watching a film etc but feel compelled to clock watch!
I've only ever had a few good decent new year eves and even then it felt forced.
I don't have Any plans so feel like I should suddenly find a friend or do something. But have learnt to accept staying home isn't anything to be ashamed about.

I hate the whole 'happy new year, happy new me' mantra. It's just putting pressure on yourself. You don't have to wait until January 1st to make changes. Any day is a good day to make a positive change. It's easy to announce you want to cut back on chocolate and alcohol when you've just had a few weeks of indulgence, but you've got no more chance of sticking to it if you start on Jan 1st than any other day.

Whilst I agree with this, i do think it's a good opportunity to take stock of your life and think about where you are, what you have a achieved over the past 12 months and where you want to be in the next 12. I think new years resolutions are a waste of time but it is useful to reassess your goals and what you need to do to achieve them. I know we can technically do this at any time but life happens and you sort of get swept up in the day to day rather than the bigger picture. Last year I decided I wasnt happy with my job and started getting my cv up to date in January, I also signed up to my employee assistance program for some support for my anxiety and depression. I'm in a better place now mentally and financially so it can be a good line.in the sand to make changes

Hate NYE biggest con ever it’s a drunkest fest same as st Patrick’s day. Tv is crap doesn’t matter whether it’s weekend or not it’s still crap. Dvds for and no I won’t be staying up till midnight.

MintyPrincess · 29/12/2022 15:22

We're going out for a meal this year mainly because sil was insisting she was coming to ours with her adult dc and dh even though we told her we don't want company!

hattie43 · 29/12/2022 15:29

I'm not big into new year . This year we are having a pub meal at lunchtime and will watch movies in the evening . Won't even stay awake to message people at 12.00. Probably get woken by bloomin fireworks though .

The only time that I found it remotely interesting, was on the 1999/ 2000 New Year, when we'd all been told that "The Millennium Bug" was going to shut everything down, or the world was going to end, depending on your beliefs. We stayed up and watched the tele, seeing other countries celebrating . Once 12 mn had come and gone, and the world was still turning, we breathed a sigh of relief and went to bed. The whole Millennium Bug thing was so silly !

The only thing "silly" is your ignorance.

Ooh I love it. We have a very lame tradition of playing board games until midnight & eating snacks. The fancy peanuts are the best part of NYE. Then the next day do a big clean to welcome in the new year with a fresh start!

Sideorderofchips · 29/12/2022 15:36

I'm dreading new years

It's the day I found out my ex husband preferred my best friend to me.

So I plan to just drink wine and hopefully sleep

I used to feel the pressure to go out and do something on NYE in my teens and 20s but not anymore. I like being up early on NYD though.
Commercial radio DJs banging on about "it's the biggest night of the year!" and "getting you ready for your new year's eve!". Shite.

Aquarius1234 · 31/12/2022 11:53

No plans, staying home alone.. I felt upset last night. Oddly. Now I'm OK.

Agree I’m curled up under my gorgeous duvet cover custom made watching dvds won’t be seeing in the new year. But happy as next year will be the start of my happiest time for ages. Biggest night of the year my arse.

hollyivysaurus · 31/12/2022 13:19

I like NYE only because we have a low key one. The kids have party poppers with dinner and do sparklers in the garden before bedtime, DH and I play scrabble and watch a film with nibbles and prosecco until midnight, then watch the fireworks on TV. It’s nice!

I really don’t miss the days of going out and having forced fun, finding somewhere that didn’t have an entry charge, trying to get a taxi home, drunk idiots everywhere etc!

TheLostNights · 31/12/2022 14:31

Feeling really down already. Same every year. 😔

Same, my birthday is NYD so as a 'youth' it was a big deal.

So much negativity on this thread, if you don't like it just put a film on or go to bed early with earplugs 🤷‍♀️ it's a great opportunity to reflect on the year that's passed and plan for the year ahead, and there's something very peaceful and serene about a bracing winter walk (followed by some chocs in front of World's Strongest Man 🙃)

My birthday is also NYD (born just after midnight) so NYE was always a big party night in my youth. Now I’m older I can see it more as a time of reflection and I think I feel the turning of the year more deeply
