Asking for a friend. Is it a measure of coping or not coping. Genuinely don't know what to think.

If they are at serious risk of harm due to abuse or neglect. Or if they have serious SEN. Generally a referral to ss is made by another agency such as health visitor, police, teacher etc

RobertaFirmino · 28/12/2022 00:31

I don't think it is as simple as that. Children get SW for all sorts of reasons, from disability to abuse. What matters is that they are being helped. That's what a good friend does too, they help.

Changingmynameyetagain · 28/12/2022 00:37

It depends on the type of social worker.
DD had a hospital social worker for a while because she has a disability and was having surgery and a long hospital stay.
She helped us sort out the logistics of being in hospital and then sorting out her discharge home.
We’ve since been discharged from their service as she’s about to age out of the paediatric team.

No hospital stuff. Hostile divorce. Personnel referral.

On MN the general consensus is that SS don’t get involved unless it’s very serious cases of abuse and neglect but that’s not true ime and I’ve known social services to get involved for loads of reasons not just very serious abuse.

Depends on your area and how stretched the team is unfortunately. Near me (post covid at least) the bar is astronomically high because there just aren't enough SWs.

Why are you asking? More info is needed. There are various reasons why children need a Social Worker

IncessantNameChanger · 28/12/2022 00:50

I think it might also varie by where you live. The bar for disability children SW is now extremely high where I live. My SW seems to spend the majority of her life in court. But I don't know if that extents beyound the disability team. So going on that, who knows. My SW is in our life to help.

BasicDad · 28/12/2022 00:51

SS were involved with my DD after alcoholism that led to police action, and then repeated suicide attempts.

They were pretty hands off as they were happy that DD had good support from a well parent and grandparents for support.

You should be able to view the threshold for social care on your local authority website.

In all the areas I am aware of social care are only working where there is significant evidence their involvement is needed to prevent harm or for disabled children with complex needs.

what is happening in your friends childrens lives.

Its really not as simple as that. There are all sorts of reasons including SEN, disability and carers.

Bluelightbaby · 28/12/2022 01:15

my DD is autistic with adhd and self harms plus has had suicide attempts. She/we have a SW
