To think you shouldn’t bring your dog into a store

harkleonhill · 27/12/2022 22:21

If it doesn’t like other dogs? Garden centre today and there were quite a few dogs.

One would not stop barking at all the other dogs. The barking went on for ages.

A while back I was in Starbucks and this dog kept barking so loud we couldn’t keep a flowing conversation.

I love dogs, I have no issue with dogs being in stores/cafes etc but if they can’t behave then I think you’re selfish.

Someone had a dog in a nice brunch cafe the other day. Barking and making a right fuss. Wasn’t impressed shouldn’t be allowed.

Keyansier · 27/12/2022 22:24

I can't stand dogs. I don't think they should be allowed out in public if they bark even once.

XenoBitch · 27/12/2022 22:24

YANBU
I love dogs, and I love seeing them in cafes. But if your dog is a pest, then leave it at home.

Oh for gods sake 🤦🏼‍♀️

Anyway, as a dog owner myself I do agree with OP. I don't take mine into places like this because I'm never sure how they might be with other dogs and get quite excited.

WetBandits · 27/12/2022 22:31

My dog quite enjoys a non-walkies outing if he’s allowed to walk around with me investigating things (e.g. garden centre), but I don’t take him to pubs/cafes because he finds it hard to settle down as he just wants to get up and explore and that gets on my tits, let alone someone else’s.

Not a chance I’d ruin anyone else’s meal or drinks just because I didn’t want to leave my perpetual toddler at home! He’s perfectly happy to be left at home so that’s what we do Smile

MissDollyMix · 27/12/2022 22:35

I agree. I have two dogs. One is an anti social bastard, apart from being annoying for other people, it’s also really stressful for us if I take her out, so she never gets taken to shops/cafes and the other is super quiet and you’d hardly know she was there, so I do take her to dog friendly cafes and shops.

Polkadotpjs · 27/12/2022 22:37

It's nice dogs can go in more places but a bit like PO I wouldn't take mine unless he'd had a mega walk for fear he'd be excitable. Took him to Starbucks but got take out cups as he barked when he saw another dog and we left immediately. All heads swivelled to look for the source of the bark but we were already on our way out !

ProlificInProfanity · 27/12/2022 22:40

as a dog owner/lover I’ve never understood why people take their dogs out and about to go into shops and cafes. It’s bizarre. Just leave them at home, the rest of the customers don’t want to look at, smell or listen to your dog!
People actually drive their dogs to the out of town pets at home. It’s so odd.

Kenwoodmixitup · 27/12/2022 22:40

shopper brought their dog unchallenged into Asda this evening. I guess it’s a triumph of consumer power.

XenoBitch · 27/12/2022 22:40

Just last week I was in a cafe and someone let their little dog run about the place. It kept dropping it's toy in front our feet (and rooting through people's shopping). At the time, I thought it was cute. Looking back, it was a pretty shitty thing for the owner to just let it run wild and then do a tinkly laugh about it just wanting to play.
If my greyhound had done the same, I bet I would have been kicked out.

Some Pets At Home have a vets and grooming parlour there. Can't really do that remotely.

Think most of us on here know you don't like dogs.

Anyway to the OP, I wouldn't take my dogs to shops or cafes. They probably wouldn't sit still and I know 1 of them would bark at people.

Bluevelvetsofa · 27/12/2022 22:58

I was annoyed with a woman in a garden centre, whose dog piddled in the main aisle and she just ignored it and carried on walking.

Mariposista · 27/12/2022 22:59

I am very lucky - my labrador literally never barks. I did wonder whether there was something wrong with him and whether he could bark 🤣 but no, he does know how to, he’s just very docile and beautifully behaved in cafés and garden centres (he has been in them since he was small enough to be carried in). But it is true, yappy, unfriendly or untrained dogs are much like badly behaved children - teach them some manners before inflicting them on the general public.

Prescottdanni123 · 27/12/2022 23:08

@ProlificInProfanity

When you are on a day out or a holiday, it does help massively if there is a dog friendly cafe to have lunch in. There is always alternatives that don't allow dogs for people who have a problem with being in the same eatery as a dog.

YANBU OP

But the staff really need to deal with it and tell the customer to leave.

I work somewhere that allows dogs in the grounds on leads, but if they're disturbing other visitors we tell them they need to leave, and they're welcome to come back without the dog.

Just out of curiosity have you had to do this? Was the reaction from the owner generally ok?

I don't think people should be allowed to buy alcohol if they cry if they don't get I'D

But hey ho you do you, I'm over here petting everyone else's dogs if they are happy to be petted...

Oldsu · 28/12/2022 00:52

I have 3 Pugs and an English Bulldog and its a pain taking them into places, not because they bark or are a nuisance but because people will insist just stopping and petting them without asking permission, 2 of the pugs are ok, in fact they are tarts and love everyone, but the others are a bonded pair, rescues with a horrible back story, the EB is very protective over her Pug brother and if someone bends down to touch him she gets very distressed, not vicious or anything just distressed and its not something we can train out of her its too ingrained, even the fact that they have harnesses on that says nervous please don't touch doesn't deter people

Lavender14 · 28/12/2022 00:57

Yanbu but I think it depends on the owners reaction, exposure is part of training. I've brought my dog into a cafe as a pup and he barked so it was coffee to go. Now hes a year old and he'll lie under the table out of the way and be quiet until its time to leave and isn't remotely reactive to anything else happening. Its also up to the owner to make sure that the place they are going has a dog friendly policy ahead of time and that the environment is suitable and they're in control.

Judgyjudgy · 28/12/2022 01:02

YANBU. People are becoming mental with dogs. I've seen some in malls now. It's like they're children (and people are already bad enough with those if they're being brats and can't behave!!)

Skate1 · 15/07/2024 07:55

Please, please, please leave your dogs at home and stop taking them to shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants. A lot of people don't like dogs but we are all having to live with choices people have made to buy them during lock down. It's a nightmare going anywhere these days. Even friends I know who like fogs think it wrong they are allowed everywhere these days. Good dog owners understand not everyone likes dogs, sadly I don't meet many. 😕

If a dog is allowed somewhere (and some cafes encourage them), then dog owners are doing nothing wrong by taking them in there.

I have a dog, and know some people don't like dogs. However, that is not my problem. I do not let her approach strangers (and tbh, she is not interested anyway).
