To give dh's inhaler to ds?

Dh has a blue inhaler for hay fever, only uses it for about a month in the summer, so we have a couple in the house. Ds (16) has had a cold for a few weeks which doesn't seem to be getting any better, and has now started wheezing. This is really unusual for him - he doesn't have asthma, but he did get this wheezing once about 5 ago. The doctor gave him steroid tablets (not sure why this and not an inhaler).

The doctor is closed and so are the pharmacists by us. I know you shouldn't give prescribed medication to someone else, I've never done it before. I'm reluctant to ring 111 as it's currently the only option for people who are really ill and ds is mostly fine apart from a very snotty nose and this wheeze. WIBU to give him a fews puffs of dh's inhaler and see if that helps?

Salbutamol won't do any harm if you stick to two puffs four times a day, I'd give it a go.

@FOJN you are right, of course, was getting my blue and brown inhalers mixed up. But the point remains the same - that there was less of the active ingredient in one full inhaler etc etc. The fact that it is non-steroidal only decreases the potential side effects.

Yes I would but then I would also get medical attention when you can.

id then get a new inhaler for your Dd and let ds keep that one

Age 16, wheezing, dad with asthma, has had steroids before...

I think your DS has asthma.

I have to say as an ex medic I'd do exactly the same.

Helplesstohelp22 · 27/12/2022 14:21

Salbutamol will only reverse bronchospasm in the context of asthma/allergy so won't help a cold.

JenniferBarkley · 27/12/2022 14:26

I would as it's vanishingly unlikely to do any harm. However I'd also seek medical attention from him, uncontrolled asthma can kill and it sounds like he needs a medical expert to have a look at him.

Agree with the poster above re asthma and his own history and the family history.

I would give some while seeking further medical advice because if it’s out of the ordinary for him then it’s best to get things checked incase it’s an infection setting in.

This.
Its useless to use on a cold. It will just make you feel like you’ve done something.
