To think parents shouldn't be upsetting their kids dressing up as The Grinch?

I've seen several videos on social media where parents film their small children's reactions of "The Grinch" coming in the room with a bag to take their presents from under the tree. The children in the videos are screaming and crying their eyes out and in one the kid is really screaming and trying to hit the grinch and telling him to get out.

It's not staged, these kids are really frightened and crying! Even when they tell the kids after it's a "joke," why would parents want to upset their kids at Christmas like this for a joke? Then to put it out there on social media where it'll no doubt be shared year after year on TikTok and the like!

It's just horrible!

Stop watching TikTok. If people don't watch it, it won't stay up. You're funding this shit.

orbitalcrisis · 26/12/2022 18:14

Nothing says Christmas fun like a traumatised child!

TheWayItAllWouldGo · 26/12/2022 18:16

It's as bad as that tiktok trend that was going round a few months ago where the parents were locking their small children in a room and putting on a filter that made it look like there was a ghost flying round the room. Some of those children were absolutely terrified and screaming their heads off crying.

But as long as the parents got their content for likes and views fuck the kids and their emotional wellbeing.

I agree with this. TikTok is vile.

CaptainBarbosa · 26/12/2022 18:17

I mean I've got a pretty dark and dry sense of humour, I've been known to play the odd prank on my child such as jumping out of a cupboard to make him jump.

But.... The Grinch thing I find disturbing. It's not a instant jump and shock then laughs and cuddles, it's a prolonged period of stress and terror those children are feeling. It's awful to watch, and it just goes on and on, the children becoming violent or screaming crying.

LadyChamberlain · 26/12/2022 18:21

I'm not on tiktok and this thread has reinforced why I never will be.

Sounds fucking traumatising and not something that the poor kids will forget.

SophieJo · 26/12/2022 18:22

I don’t find it funny at all. In fact I think it’s an awful thing to do prank or not. What on earth are the parents thinking of?

zeddybrek · 26/12/2022 18:25

It's really upsetting to see, scaring children is absolutely not funny. It's disturbing that anyone find this funny. We have failed as a society that laughing at trembling children is deemed as entertainment.

"Likes" apparently 🙄

YANBU, these parents are worse than The Grinch and I wonder if these parents actually know the story - even The Grinch came on Christmas Eve when almost everyone was asleep and reacted with some compassion when a small child Who caught him and then returned them in morning... or in the Grinch Night one, there was warning so everyone could hide behind barred doors and really was only an ass to the kid who kept asking for it.

What they're doing is both mean to kids and makes no sense with the story or the character.

Yoyoyoyoyoyo · 26/12/2022 19:15

My brother and his wife did this to their children, when I was sent the video I said I didn’t think it was funny but apparently because I don’t want children I don’t know what I’m talking about and I have no right to say anything about parenting. The children are still having nightmares about it though, despite me being wrong and it being hilarious 🤷🏽‍♀️

Manicpixidreamgirl · 26/12/2022 19:16

I still feel awful for that little boy in the video from years ago - I can’t remember what it’s called but it’s the one saying ‘I’m on the good list actually’. People think it’s funny because he’s pretty cross but you can tell it’s because he’s upset by his dad (?) teasing him.

Oh wow that's awful! You don't have to have kids of your own to say it's cruel and unfunny to traumatise your own kids and video it!

Definitely warrants a visit from social services if the parents are this desensitised to their childrens distress and actually find it entertaining. Something very wrong there.

StrongCoffeeAvalanche · 26/12/2022 19:51

It's awful. I cannot comprehend how a parent could do that to their child. Or once they see that their reaction is so awful why not stop the "prank" immediately and console your terrified and traumatised child?

I also hate the trend where people tell their relatives of the death of a famous person. The genuine shock, heartbreak and grief displayed. It's not funny.

Doubt social services could ( or would have time/resources) to do bugger all!

You’re probably right but these parents could really do with some parenting classes.

I guess none of you knew about Krampus or Struwwelpeter growing up.

HaggisWurst · 26/12/2022 20:41

I saw one of these the other day. It made me feel ill. The little boy in the video was around the same age as my DS (2.5) and the thought of someone doing that to him breaks my heart (he's such a sensitive little man). I don't understand how anyone can do that to their children. It's not funny or a joke. It's just nasty.

YABU, I hate seeing any kind of prank done to kids just to post online for likes and views. The kids don't even know they're being posted online in a vulnerable moment for strangers to laugh at. Any parent that does it is an arsehole.

Sorry OP I meant YANBU

It really depends on so much stuff. So easy to just say ‘it’s child abuse’.
