To go check on the car parked facing my house

Since Christmas Eve I have noticed a car parked across in the car park opposite my house. The lights have been on, but never really took notice properly since yesterday. It was definitely there all day yesterday, my dad said oh it’s gone this was late at night. I didn’t check and went to bed. Woke up this morning and it’s there for sure with the lights on, I’ve looked a bit closer and looks like someone is in there moving around. So weird! Should I go and check? My first thought was someone was hurt but someone is sat in the drivers seat and moving

They could be hurt - or homeless!

No harm in asking if they need help!

Shinyandnew1 · 26/12/2022 11:59

The car light has been on since Christmas Eve? I can’t imagine it’s for much battery left! I’d pop out and ask if they are ok.

brusselspout · 26/12/2022 12:01

Hmm. I'd do a subtle walk past but I wouldn't go knocking on any windows if I was on my own tbf

UnpackThisMess · 26/12/2022 12:02

Of course you go and check. Photos or it didn't happen though.

Creepyweep · 26/12/2022 12:03

You want me to upload pictures of a random person say outside my house in their car to prove they’re sat there?

I thought the batter would have run out by now so it’s so weird! I’m going to do a walk past in a bit on the way to the shops

OP posts:
Peashoots · 26/12/2022 12:04

Why wait until you go the shops? If you’re worried someone is hurt surely you’d just nip over and ask if they’re ok.

Creepyweep · 26/12/2022 12:06

Because I’m alone and I’d rather not approach a man alone. I can see someone moving, but it’s creepy to have been parked for three days

NoSquirrels · 26/12/2022 12:08

When you say the lights are on you mean interior lights? They could be using a camping light etc.

It sounds like someone who is homeless.

If you are concerned you could call 101 or report online and community policing will check it out.

Creepyweep · 26/12/2022 12:10

No as in headlights. They’re on even in the daytime… same as yesterday

OP posts:
pocketvenuss · 26/12/2022 12:12

Why would they leave their headlights on. Even to run heating you don't need headlights on

TimeForMeToF1y · 26/12/2022 12:15

I'm amazed that 3 days of the lights on hasn't run the battery down unless he's been starting the engine to keep it charged

Why would the lights be on anyway?

DiddyHeck · 26/12/2022 12:15

Just leave them alone.

They've been there 2 days, their battery hasn't run out so the light's haven't been on the whole time.

They're probably kipping in their car for reasons only known to them. There's no need to ask Mumsnet if you should do anything, either nip over or don't.

VerifiedBot2351 · 26/12/2022 12:18

Are the headlights shining into your house? That would annoy me.

Creepyweep · 26/12/2022 12:18

Well someone told me to call the police but that feels a bit much. No idea why they would keep the lights on even in the but being parked facing my house directly does creep me out a bit

OP posts:
LaQuern · 26/12/2022 12:24

Can you take a neighbour with you to check it out?

Tilllly · 26/12/2022 12:26

Maybe "report" it on 101 online, as a welfare check
A local PCSO could check the occupant is ok

I'd not be worried about approaching, more that they're not ok and tell me about it - then I'd feel obligated to help!

hcnirg · 26/12/2022 12:30

They may have automatic headlights turned on, they'll be on in gloomy weather if the key is in the ignition. He/she may be keeping themselves warm, living or staying in their car

MavisMcMinty · 26/12/2022 12:30

Could be your very own The Lady in the Van - you could write a play about it in the future!

DiddyHeck · 26/12/2022 12:35

If they only knew how much attention you're paying them, I'm sure they'd be way more creeped out 😂

Creepyweep · 26/12/2022 12:52

Haha no I never paid much attention until last night. It’s literally outside my house across a road. When I look out from my sink I can see them. I never thought that it could be automatic headlights and someone could be sleeping in their car

Either you want someone to check it out (call 101 or report online or go and see yourself) or you don’t?

It’s almost certainly someone who is homeless, perhaps temporarily or perhaps more permanently.

The weather is pretty warm for December here so I would ignore it, I think. But police can welfare check and signpost to homeless outreach services so it’s not a ridiculous idea, if it is concerning you/creeping you out.

If my engine is running the headlights are on , no way of turning them off totally

fancyacuppatea · 26/12/2022 13:03

What room do they face? - Just keep the blind down and make sure the curtains are closed when it starts to get dark.
Make sure your doors/GF windows are locked shut all the time.
Leave them to it.

amiold · 26/12/2022 13:08

Ask the police to do a welfare check?

Greyarea12 · 26/12/2022 13:35

Sounds like someone sleeping in their car. If my engine is on, my LED headlights come on and no way to turn them off.
